Builders Block
« on: January 15, 2007, 04:04:17 PM »
Does anyone have the cure for "Builders Block" ? I started a Twister around Thanksgiving, framed most of the wing and there it sits. Had an excuse until deer season was over ,but now I go to the basement and it says"Are you ever going to finish me"? I have a couple of other kits to finish before spring.I guess Builders Block is as bad as Writers Block!

You don't have to finish it in "Sparky Speed" just a little something each day adds up. All of a sudden you see the light at the end of the tunnel and that usually gets me pumped up to finish it.

I guess what really got me down was the fact I built a Skyray 35 last spring In my very humid garage very straight and now in my "dry" basement the Twister is just that!

If you think you can save it, get a steamer and work on straightening the twists. Don't give up on it till you at least try. Theres all kinds of post's on doing it. YOU CAN DO IT.

I know we all go through this stage, sometimes worse than others. I've a Lil T'Bird that's been sitting on the bench waiting to be finished for over a year. I just can't seem to get interested in finishing it up. Partly, I think, it's because I know it's going to be an overweight pig. I just don't want to put the effort into it.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to give it to someone who would get some use out of it. At least it would get finished and flown.

That, I believe is the main reason some planes become permanent residents of the shop. Something goes wrong, and you just lose interest. Just bite the bullet, get rid of it to someone who wants it, and start a new project.

Now, if for some reason, you just can't part with the shop queen, here's a sure fire way to get it finished.

Vow, and I do mean vow, to spend at least 15 minutes each day in the shop working on it. Anyone can afford 15 minutes from even the busiest schedule. After a while, you'll get past whatever was your hold up, and suddenly, you'll get turned back on to the project. Try it, I dare you.

Talk radio or music. Definitely music. (At the building site.)

Thanks for the opinions, guys.I think i know my motivation for finishing this plane.I know three teenagers(11-15),whom all like airplanes. The 11 yr old is my nephew, the other two are friends of his family.Meet those two the other night ,mentioned model airplanes and they had all kinds of questions. So although i'm a novice ,there are several "experienced"pilots in our club(Plainfield Screaming Eagles RC club).I'm pretty sure the would help with these youngsters, not to mention Clancy Arnold(member of the real C/L club in Indy, the Sportliners)

I bought a little radio/cd player/tape player to go along with the tv/vcr in the basement workshop (the Fortress of Solitude!).  I found that unless I had a C/L video on the TV, I had better have the radio or some kind of music playing!  I don't really watch TV, but when I'm in the shop, if it's on, I tend to watch it......

I take little side steps to other more exciting projects, usually go out to the shop first thing in the morning and work for an hour or so on whatever the big project is then find myself having to wait for something to dry or cure. This morning I painted flames on the tail of my Nobler and knew I didn't want to touch it till the paint was dry tomorrow. Spent a little time on the computer trying to design and draw a tank for the silly thing. It only has room for a 4 ounce commercial tank and I need at least 5 1/2 ounces for the ST 46.

Got tired of that so I decided to make the bending jig for my Saito exhaust pipe. That was fun and nothing to do with glue or paint.

Ordered a couple M10x1 taps, ground one of them down to make a bottoming tap, found a couple pieces of steel in the scrap bin that looked like they would work for what I had in mind and this is what I ended up with.

The idea is to fill the Saito tube with sand, heat it up and gently bend it to a 90 so my muffler isn't hanging down below the fuselage on my Score. Haven't actually tried it yet, need to find some sand but see no reason it shouldn't work. The only risk might be breaking off the threaded part of the pipe. But thinking if I have it hot enough that shouldn't be an issue. As you can see in the background of the second picture, I CAN get it hot enough

Steve, you'r obviously a lot faster builder than you realise. Some day I am definitely going to finish the old Frog Attacker kit I started when rooming in Southampton in 1967. Sadly the silk has perished and it's having to be recovered, before it's even finished! ~^

[I can remember the schedule o.k., the problem is remembering what was the last manoeuvre I just flew!].

It's easy to sidetrack me,especially after deer season. My brain wants to spend time outdoors ,but my body(young 43)says it's way to cold.
I have started on the Twister again, maybe finsh it by spring(HOPEFULLY)
thanks for all the input

I usually plan a project, then dither getting it started. Once started I usually go great guns, working on it consistently until it's framed. Once framed, there is usually a bit of lull as I try to motivate myself to finish up the little bits that are left like finish sanding, building wheel pants or cowl attachment stuff. Sometimes I breeze through this and sometimes not.

I find the process of finishing tedious. I do it because I like the finished product and am always looking for ways to shorten this part of the process. Sometimes I'll breeze through this also, but times like now with excessively cold weather and what feels like constant dark it's hard to maintain a head of steam.

Tonight I start bulletproofing the Twister.Shearweb on the spars and a second layer of ply (1/32)on the nose back to mid point of the wing.
Once I get to the finishing (covering of the wing)thats where I start lookig for some experienced help.My Skyray was covered (with my help)by my fathers old combat partner(fulltime r/c,part time c/l,hoping to change that).
