I think I-Beamers should have cloth hinges just for the traditional look. ;D

Hi Alan,
I use the nylon taffeta and go all the way across the flaps and elevators. Gives you sealed hingelines right off the bat. Apply them before you cover the parts, nit like with nylon hinges and they will almost disappear in the finish. Nylon hinges will work, but it takes me longer to get them installed properly that it does to dope on the taffeta hinges. Plus, they just LOOK right on an I-Beam! ;D ;D

And you get the dacron hinge material where? I've used gun cleaning patches on my Flite Streak.

You get the nylon form most fabric stores, It is sold as lining material. It is thin and almosT invisble.
The biggest disadvantage to fabric hinges, is getting a clean hinge line due to paint build up. The I-beam wing hinge line has plenty of material to allow use of Dubro ot Klett type hinges. By using them you can do all the painting with the controL surfaces off the airplane, resulting in a cleaner line

While in truth the hinge line material is adequate for "pin" style nylon hinges of the Dubro/Klett type, is fairly sacreligious to use same on a model of the I-beam category.......
Painted edges have never been a problem using cloth hinges. Papa Dave Hemstraught informed me to fold over sandpaper and run it back and forth and down the hinge line periodically to keep it sanitary, many moons ago.
Anyway, Billy prefers them! ;D

I started using other types of hinges in the 60s. including nylon and brass hinges. In fact by "Clipper" from the 60s had brass hinges.
And not all I-beamers has cloth hinges. Here is Charley Lickliter's "Ballerina" that I posted on the Ballerina thread. I just love that hinge line look!

Ah.......... Tom, you have a lot more patience than I! Those brass hinges are excellent and really look beautiful on a plane. Just have never found the time to actually do them!

The Skyscraper (I know, not an I-Beam) from '64 (IIRC) shows plastic hinges on the plans.
