Title: Hangar 9 paint question
Post by: Larry Renger on June 23, 2008, 11:11:36 PM
Being desperate to match the color of some UltraKote, I purchased a can of matching Hangar 9 paint.  I have heard negative reviews on this stuff and would like some more input before screwing up a perfectly good model.

1.  Is the stuff not adequately fuelproof for 10 -15% nitro as claimed?

2.  Is it so bad that it should be immediately taken to the toxic waste dump?

3.  What cautions should be used for the undercoating, I was planning to put it over a Nitrate Dope base.

4.  Without going into 2-part systems is there an alternative to matching Flame Red Ultrakote?

HELP!!!!!   ???

What you could do is take the monokote to a auto paint store.Have them shoot a profit on it to match it perfectly. Then have them make you a spray can of single stage Auto Urethane.

Larry,

I gave up on the Ultracote paint---it took days to almost dry and wasn't even close to being fuel resistant, much less fuel proof.

I think you will find Top Flite Lustercoat paint much better stuff.  The Lustercoat Missle Red is a very close match to UltraCote Flame Red----not perfect, but very close.  I mixed some Sig Light Red and some Sig Lemon Yellow dope to match the Ultracote Flame Red, but the Lustercote works very well.

Cheers,
Jim

Edit to add:  No intent to bash Horizon products; I like Ultracote covering much better than Monocote covering......

I am not familiar with the term "profit" as applied to paint.  What does it mean?

A profit is a machine they use to match colors. Auto paint drys in a hour.

Larry,

I have done what Sparky suggested. Worked very well. Take your Monokote to Auto paint store. I use Omni

Base Coat Clear Coat system. Spray your colors then spray clear over the whole plane!

Purple,Yellow and White are paint on fuse of modified Score ,wing is Monokote .(http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j262/kickercoach12/KA10FOOTBALLINDIO039.jpg)
