Title: Got a start on the Veil
Post by: Greg L Bahrman on May 19, 2006, 08:35:12 PM
This is all the farther I got for now. Need to do the cowl next. Well I feel like a tortise compared to you know who. Learning new stuff is a kick.

Do not sand it until you have at least 3 coats of dope on it and then only sand with 400 grit paper lightly.  Looks good I don't know what you skill level was before but it looks as go as I can do.

This is my first full bodied ship (Magnum). So I tend to screw up a lot as I stumble along.  #^  Skill level been kind of in the dumpster and on top of the lack of knowledge and skill and also this was a kit with no plans.

If you put veil on the wing, take it across the center section. Veiling a wing up to the body creates stress riser and I know of one case where a veiled wing so done broke off at the body in flight.

Thanks for the info Jim.....I already fiberglassed the top and bottom of the wing. I'm of course hoping from all I read that this will be adequate.
Covered the cowl with veil, it's slowly coming together. It looks ugly but after sanding it's as smooth as a babies bottom. Cowl is mounted with no screws on the sides. I put them in the bottom.  n~

Hi Guys,
Tanks Greg for showing the veil tag, now I know what to order.
I went to aero com site today and ordered a 10' roll.

Thanks again Greg,
Mike Clark

No problem Mike, I had trouble finding the right stuff also. I guess there is more than one type but this one was recommended and it worked great. The roll I got was 4 ft. x 34 in. Looks to be enough to do 1 or 2 planes. It was approx. $12.00 dollars. Make sure you give it 3 to 4 coats of clear like Sparky says letting it dry overnight between coats before you start sanding.  y1

Also an aside I learned from Rusty Brown.  Do not wipe the dust off after sanding the first coats.  It will help fill the weave with the later coats.  Only wipe dust off before putting on last clear base.  It does take less finish than fibre glas.   DOC Holliday

You say sand after 3 coats 400 grit sand lightly. Do you put more coats of dope on? or do you put fillitts in then prime?

Greg, I've been following your build. Man, it's coming out very nice. Before long Spanky and Randy and the rest of the guys will have another top builder to join their ranks.

I gotta give you a k-point this time.  Keep up the good work.
