The hardware store I use to by clear white pine went out of business years ago. So I have been stuck making beams from a composit balsa layup. I looked all over and found a local lumber yard that has it in 16 foot lengths. The saw man was very helpful and cut them into 6 foot sections.

What I am getting at is my next plane will be totally old school built as far as wood work goes. The laminate balsa spar ends up between 2.5 oz and 3.75 oz. A white pine spar ends up between 1 and 1.5 OZ. As soon as I am done sanding and hollowing it I will post a picture. Next years planes weight I am shooting for 50 to 55 OZ ready to fly.

I bought the plug in Yatsinko style landing gear to save a ounce and 2 ounces on the battery a ounce on the spar. If I do nothing more I will make it. But I am going to do a lot more. Next years plane will have a more classic look. I am bringing back my Viper 1 style. Built in the same tradition.

I know it is not but that looks like my Juno.

More Ares than Nobler to me.   

Building with that "egg" type fuselage that was mentioned before and done before, plus eliminating the area of the canopy line and that portion of the turtle deck, may not look as nice, but could save serious weight.

Shorter wheel pants with open sides could save weight also.

All of it adds up.
