Gee Bee R3 Build Dilemma. Pandora's Box?
« on: September 25, 2017, 07:09:07 PM »
I have this Gee Bee R3 Build going on over at CFC Graphics. I'm almost done with the complete framing of the model except for one area. The cowling venting.

I have these Taiwanese louvers for this purpose because no matter how I approach the issue, I thought this was my best option.

These louvers have 12 holes for mounting each. I'd rather bypass that and sink them into the cowling and finish them off flush.

This would eliminate 24 holes, nuts and bolts, washers also. A bit more work but it would be a cleaner look when completed.

Bolt it or finished flush?

Just thought I'd run this by the Forum for advice or suggestions. Possibly someone has used these items?

That's an easy one Charles.  Flush.....but put small fake rivets around them.  All those nuts and bolts would be a pain. H^^

+1 what Glen said. Finish flush. If you choose a stile of finish stay wit it. If the model has a clean and slick finish (like a Nemesis racer) then stay like that or if it is like a Stuka dive bomber rough and crude then stay in that theme. When you mix them it looks crappy in my opinion. Also with some exceptions (a certain Ringmaster comes to mind  ;) the best paint layouts where done with themes that repeat on the wings and the fuselage kind of like when you decide the paint on the fuse and then you mimic it on the wings and tails too.

If you put the decorative part there why not go one step farther and make it functional and use it for motor cooling exhaust air. Or maybe you are already doing it.
I really like this detail.

Hey! Hey! Glenn my only Poster. Almost.  LL~

Yes, I'll recess the thing and put a row of fake vinyl rivets. I have a few.

Thanks for the reply.

Traian,

Thanks for the reply. I agree with all your comments. Yes, I'll go flush, I do plan on removing the cowling material under the louvers to vent out air.

Thanks for the reply.

Well guys, I took your advice and recessed the louvers flush with the cowling. They are working louvers and should vent the cowling just fine.

All that's left is silking. I might glass instead.

Maybe.
