Gang Sanding (Ribs)
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:17:00 AM »
Is there a way to stack geodetic ribs and sand them all together if the wing has a tapered leading edge and tapered in thickness and there are 6 straight ribs in the center section?

Thanks,
MM

No practical way, without the lost foam core. The lost foam system essentially does the same thing one rib at a time. If all you have are the ribs, then wait until it is assembled, and in the jig, then use a long sanding block to sand them even. Use relatively coarse paper with very light pressure and just enough time to get them even.

I have allways made the ribs & glued them in place oversized, just adjusted the lenght correct.
Then sanded them true with a long, straight sanding block and plywood templates in both ends of wing panel. I like it because it gives a perfect contact between the ribs and sheeting.
But I have not used diagonal ribs, maybe it will be more difficult. Even with normal ribs you must be very carefull.

Even with utmost care I can manage to break every (well most) rib at least once!  LL~ LL~ LL~

I built a Shark 402 and yes! I broke almost every rib! Thanks to hot stuff you couldn't tell.........

Keep sanding, Jerry

Doesn't Bobby Hunt show this on one of the lost foam video's?  Especially if you use molded leading edges.
