The Micro-Kerf 40 table saw blade, http://www.rockler.com/how-to/total-solutions-micro-kerf-40-blade-thinnest-carbide-blade-efficient-cutting-power/ , is a wonderful tool for cutting balsa. It makes convenient 1/16"-wide slots and doesn't waste much material. When you pass your thumb through the blade as I did this evening, it tears much less meat out than does the usual blade and the wound doesn't bleed as much. The thumb has been reassembled and will be back in service in two weeks.

the things that are good at removing wood or metal, remove other stuff as well.

Howard, I thought you knew better. But, I guess accident do happen. Some time ago there was a video going around about a safety saw. Supposedly it would stop when flesh touché the blade. I never even thought of getting it as I know how videos can be manipulated.

John, this is one time when your pessimism is unfounded. That system does work and almost all table saws are no being offered with it.

Thank you for this excellent tip Howard, and for your personal "testing" of the product, it's always nice to learn of a new and more efficient tool.

Hopefully, with the better quality of the cut, your digit will heal quicker than normal.

Howard,, the good news is that you are not ready to paint yet,, so you dont have to worry about getting thinner in the cuts,,

Yes, I am a pessimist, I still can't see how the saw blade can tell when it hits flesh. Even watched the video several times.

There is an electronic sensor sorta of like the that in a GFI (ground fault interrupter). So flesh contact is detected in a very small fraction of a second. That then causes a part to launch itself into the blade teeth jamming the blade and thus an instant stop. This all happens so darn fast you wont even get a scratch. But you will have to buy a new blade as the original is destroyed to save you injury. I don't know if the violent blade stop causes any damage to the rest of the saw.

A new blade is a very worthwhile sacrifice versus what could happen.

I found out how fast a GFI is a couple of times. A old metal cased hand tool had a direct short from hot side to case. I never felt the slightest tingle, just heard the GFI pop and lost bench power. I am a little slow at times. I reset the GFI and reached for the tool a second time. Then went duh, I think something is wrong here.

There no safety braking system on older saws. This is relatively new feature. The safety system that is on new saws will not save you from stitches. It is supposed to save you from amputation. USE A PUSH STICK.

Check out the Saw Stop. They do work, I saw the live demo they do with a hot dog at a woodworking show several years ago. Barely a knick on the skin of the dog before the blade brake fires to stop the blade and retract it below the table top. Ever since been keeping an eye out for a used one and finally scored a low mileage one this past summer.

So, some modeling guru should come up with a similar method to stop a prop from eating your hand. I'd bet Al Rabe could do it!
