I am finally finishing two planes and will be my two first using dope, hopefully. But the question is do you fill pin holes and minor imperfections before doping, or after. That is question number one and two is this. Can I use LePage Instant Poly Filla to do this. It i sthe pre-mixed stuff for drywall. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I fix the major dings before dope, and the minor stuff after the first couple coats are on. The dope will raise the grain of the wood and you will sand that off. Then you can start to tell how much filler is left to apply.

BEFORE you fill try wetting the area with good ol' H2O, it will swell dented wood, many times back to its original shape. As a matter of fact, wipe the entire model down with a wet cloth and let it dry. This will raise the compressed grain and minor dents etc.

Thanks for the reminder, Randy.
Back 30 odd years ago, I ran a Golf Club repair business. I used a shop rag (wet) and a monocoat iron to remove a LOT of dents and dings in the persimmon heads. Steam will take out a whole lot of pretty severe dents!

When it comes to steam taking out dents, Will it work if the plane is already finnished with color and trim but no clear?

Yes, but be careful as to the heat bubbling the paint. Having a finish on it reduces the effects, somewhat, but it still will help. it is tricky, though.
