Short pieces of dowels with one end cut at a 45 degree angle. Line up 6 or 8 with them touching.

Thin walled fiber glass arrow shafts work well. Cut them to shape and epoxy them in place. Easy to work with. Easy to paint. Light. Completely fuel proof

You could try some short sections of thinwall aluminum tubing cut to length, and flare the ends lightly by tapping on them or create a "die" that can be inserted in the end to get the flaired look. This depends on which version of the airplane you are creating. Some had a very different flared head on the stacks. the Aluminum tubing is very mallable and fairly light as well.

Al Rabe does some nice ones. Look for some of his post. I think ssw may hold most of them. The search now works.
I will see if I saved any pics.

I have made an *exhaust manifold* out of balsa and cut aluminum tubing to length. Quick and simple, and pretty light.

Bill.......... don't you vacuform those exhausts that came in the Midwest kits??

I recall reading of using elbow macaroni. Pasta comes in a lot of different sizes and shapes--an underutilized resource. ;D

Why "Fake" exhausts!
On my P-38 I extended the exhaust outlet from the muffler 18 inches to the outlet of the supercharger on top of the booms to give true scale exhaust.
On my C-7A Caribou I used one of the two scale exhaust stacks as the exhaust outlet for each engine. Pretty convincing when there is a slick of oil on the top of the flap after a flight.

It's only a profile !!!!
Draw them or "Paint" or whatever program you have, print 'em up, spray with urethane, and stick on like decals.

Howard Rush made decals of the turbo chargers for Paul Walker's B-17 stunter (2000 World Champs 9th place). You can see one in the photo just in this side of the LG leg. In person, they looked so realistic that I had to feel it with a finger to see if it was really 3D...it wasn't. You might be able to make a decal, or just a paper 'photo' that you could stick on with dope and epoxy over. There should be 6 stacks on each side, being as your P-40 would have been Allison V-12 powered. ;D Steve
