fin and stab
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:23:37 PM »
Building a profile p-40. Any pros or cons to gluing fin and stab on before gluing wing in? I normally go wing, stab, then fin, but somehow got tail feathers done before wing. thanks Jack

You , or I should say I, don't want to glue the tail feathers on until the wing is in and straight because the stab needs to referenced to the wing as for accuracy.  Measure from a place on the wing and equal distance from the fuse on each side and line the tips of the stab up that way.

Pretty much what Brother Will said, plus I will probably break the tail if I install it before the wing is in.

Which P-40 are you building?  I assume it's one of Pat's many?

I usually do the vertical stabilizer with the profile fuselage before inserting the wing or horizontal stab, since it is easier to attach accurately, fillet, blend, and sand to a finish, without the other things being in the way or getting damaged. In fact, I build it as part of the profile structure. The fuselage is ready for color by the time I insert the wing. Filleted areas are roughed and not so ready, and through my many crashes, I have yet to break off a vertical stab or damage any fillet - not even a crack. My fillets are epoxy/microballoons or balsa.
