Dupont thinner, 3608S

This is for those of you that use this thinner. Can it be used with Brodak's "retarder"???  This stuff dries almost too fast for me.

I've used 3608S with SIG retarder and SIG dope with no problems.

It should be noted that 3608 is the fastest thinner. There are others. I think 3610 is the medium temp thinner and what? 3612  is the slow stuff? I don't remember the numbers offhand, but 3608 is just the most popular version. There are others.

This dose not answer your question on 3608 but...

I use 3602S with Brodak dope & Brodak retarder. This combo works well.

Hi, Ty, we use 3608-s with Brodak dope and Brodak retarder, no problems.  In more humid times, we go to 3602-s, which has retarder already in it...again, works well with both Brodak and Sig dopes.  As has been said, don't get carried away using the retarder.  We've NOT had success with any other brand that is supposed to be "equal" to the DuPont thinners.

Bill,

Thanks, I knew the numbers weren't right, but I couldn't for the life of me remember what was what. I haven't used DuPont stuff in more than 10 years and just couldn't remember.

A consistent thread in all the posts I have seen on Dupont thinners (3608S, etc., ) is the *S* suffix.    Just an observation, but I KNOW that *VS* DOE NOT WORK!

Does anyone know if DuPont makes a separate retarder, and if it is compatible with dope? I've been using the thinner and it's great. I really need some retarder, but buying it from Brodak and paying more for shipping than for the retarder is tough. None of the LHS that I have checked within a 100+ mile radius has any kind of retarder, brodak, sig, or any other brand.

DuPont does make retarders.  Not sure how they work with dope, but I have shot DuPont Acrylic Lacqure and Acrylic Enamals on cars, and used retarder to get good flow out.

David-
Not sure where you live but you can get a gallon of retarder from TexAir parts up here in Fort Worth. Might also be able to bum some off of an airport mechanic locally that does dope and fabric work if you are not near here. Or, if you know someone who is coming to the Dallas contest next weeekend, I could get some to him for you.

Thanks Don, I'm in College Station, but have family in Mansfield. I'll check with the local A&P's and see if they do fabric work. If not, I'll bug my brother-in-law about getting some for me from TexAir.

I should note that the reason I quit using DuPont thinners wasn't because they didn't work. It's because I live in the tree hugger capital of the world. Don't you know that any lacquer is evil and a direct product of the Devil? Anything that DuPont makes must be bad because they are an evil chemical company. But definition, they must be evil.

Sigh... Living with the mentally handicapped can be trying.
