Doing Chipmunk crash repair

So four or five years ago I wrecked this thing at the Golden State meet. I was trying to fly it wind that I had no business in whatsoever. But I figured if David, Howard, Paul, Brett, et al were doing it, so could I.

Wrong.

The 'Chip was whizzing through the pattern so fast that I couldn't keep up with it, and the 2nd outside loop of the square 8 did me in. Dammit! Skidded inverted into to the blacktop.

I deemed this plane worthy of repair, so it'll fly again. New tail feathers, new canopy, repair gouges in the nose and wingtip. I'll repaint the repaired areas and the shoot the whole model with clear.

Congratulations on your efforts to bring your damaged Chipmunk back to life.

Checks! Ya gotta love checks.

Just so happens I make checks in paint mask in any size. A lot!

When you're ready to paint your checks, let me know. I'll be glad to offer checks in the sizes you need in sheet form. I use a yellow professional quality masking material.

Same material I used on my Flite Streak. Makes for clean painted edges.

Got alll the structural stuff done and just sprayed the white base. The nose and cowl were fuel soaked so had a hard time with those and they still don’t look great, but acceptable just need some color and clear then I can fly it this year. Hope I didn’t pick up too much weight with the repair. It was already at 48oz ready to fly.

Since I’m wait on some stencil masks to be cut for the F-86, I messed around with the Chipmunk today. Gotta get it back in the air.
Repainted the red sides and blue stripe. Just need the checkerboards then clear coats. I’m going to clear the whole model again and rub it out. Still won’t look like new, but good enough.

Indeed it is. Built years ago but never painted. I added trike gear.  Monokote and Rustoleum finish. OS 25SF. Hasn’t been flown yet but should be a hot rod.

Edit: and now that I had to get it down for that pic I went ahead and put a gas tank on it. So now it’s ready to go.

 Thought so. I've got one of those kits on my shelf, another of many I'd like to get built.

 I really don't care for hand launching but for me it's a model I'd seriously consider building without L/G, I just think it would present much better in the air that way. With the thin wing it wouldn't hurt to avoid that extra weight either. If I did go with L/G I'd have to do the proper trike setup as you have. A tail dragger Navion would just be silly, very un-Navionish.  ;D
