Title: Cutting a canopy
Post by: James Mills on January 26, 2008, 09:52:10 PM
I posted a how to question for cutting down a canopy to fit the top block.  Are there a certain kind of scissors for this?

Thanks,

James

I use Hobbico curved tip canopy sissors from Tower.

Ok, it was supposed to be funny.   :##

I just draw the approximate shape on the canopy and use a pair of scissors to cut it out then trim down until it fits. Then sand paper.

James, Send  me a e-mail for the address on the new field. I saw the pictures, looks like a great site.

If you do a google map search the addres is 2750 W. Bennett.

I'm getting my Formula S for classic put together, and I've also got the fuse for a Starfire/Temptest framed up and out of the jig.

Randy,

I seem to run into problems trying to get the shape close, end up cutting away to much of the canopy.  I just got a couple from Sig, so will see how it goes.

Thanks,

James

I'm with Leester, Hobbico curved tip canopy scissors from Tower are the perfect solution. They work great and allow you to follow the line. Highly reccommended...

James,

Don't try to hit the mark of the first cut. Leave yourself a half inch or so of wiggle room the trim it a little at a time.

I use the Hobbico scissors. I agree with Randy, trim small amounts at a time or have a couple of extra canopys on hand.

Temporarily securing 60-80 grit sandpaper (grit side out of course!  n~ ) to the fuselage is a very good way to do the final fitting to the fuselage.

I do the same method as Windy (and others, I'm sure) shows on many of his tapes as to cutting a trough in the top block to inlet the canopy.  Gives you even a touch more wiggle room.
