Title: Covering Stationary Flaps
Post by: Motorman on December 09, 2014, 09:40:35 AM
I'm building a Brodak Yak9 for my wife and don't need the complexity of installing moveable flaps. This leaves the flaps glued solid on the trailing edge which creates a pollywog airfoil. How do you usually cover this concave area with monokote? Do you cover the flaps first then over lap 1/4" with the wing covering or just go for all one piece?

Thanks,
MM

I go for one piece, I iron the 'coat down thoroughly on both the trailing edge and the flap, and then I spend the rest of the life of the plane touching it up when it pulls away.

I suppose that if I were smart I'd prep the wood with one of the 'coat adhesion enhancers (Balsa-rite?) beforehand, but I'm never trying for a show-winning finish when I'm covering with 'coat.

I cover stationary flaps and wing with one piece of covering.   A good iron will put the covering down solid and maybe a glove to press down also.   Don't use the hot air gun over the joint.

Having a glove on when you shrink the wing with an air gun is a good idea, too -- if you accidentally separate the material, you can stick it back down again with a gloved finger.  You can stick it down with an ungloved finger, too, but it hurts.

I think I'll just cover the flaps before I glue them on.

Hi Walt,

That should work!

Hi Walt

I know you probably have already finished this project but I will mention this anyway.  Allen Brickhaus told me once how he covered his wings with Ultracote when they had stationary flaps that were edge glued to the trailing edge of the wing .  Allen used an iron and ONLY IRONED the edge of the stationary flap to attach the covering.  He did not press down and attach the covering to the top and bottom flat surfaces of the flaps.  I have followed his method ever since and it works well.
