Pushrod splices - Alternatives to soldering
« on: June 21, 2012, 05:56:07 PM »
When splicing two metal pushrods I'd like to try a Carbon tube splice with JB weld.

I know some of you guys build-up carbon/ ball-link pushrods with threaded end inserts like this, why not a standard threaded pushrod with a ball-link and L-end/ keeper at the elev.?

I just don't have clearance for a soldering iron and the supplied solder coupler.

Thanx.

Why don't you make up a test push rod and test it to destruction?  With standard JB, not the 5 minute mix.  I suspect the threaded rod will fail before the epoxy joint. And if there is a problem, you won't crash an airplane.

If you have do it, put a few small notches in the metal pushrod with a Dremel cutoff wheel. Make them about a third of the way through the thickness of the rod, and keep them toward the end opposite the threaded/exposed end with a nice smooth length of (sanded) rod in between. Do like four to six notches or so, this will greatly help the "bite" of the JB Weld joint.

Personally I'd trust that process more than a solder joint, but no splice at all is still better. :)

Both ends of the 2 pc. pushrod are built-in to the structure with no access. ( Brodak Corsair, you splice the bellcrank pushrod to the previously installed elevator pushrod) If I had to do it over I would arrange the assembly steps so yuo could use a 1 pc. It would be nice if the splice ends were threaded LH/RH! If someone made a 4-40 turnbuckle they'd make a killin'.
As far as an epoxy joint, vibration would be my only concern.

They already exist, Central Hobbies, assorted RC car tie rods and even DuBro makes them.

Nothin' worth posting. I'm sheeting the wing and sorting out the linkage.
