I have an Umland kit of the Colossus that I'm going to build this fall and was curious what weight I should aim for?
Thanks,
James

Ty,
Thanks for the reply. I'm not going to start mine until I finish a few other projects. I've a PA 40RE/muffler I'm going to use.

My recollection is that the Colossus is around 750 square inches. I know the PA .40 is a strong engine, but I'd want more cubic inches. I've seen Gordan Delaney fly his Colossus with a Glenn Dye reworked ST G.51. ;D Steve

I spoke with Randy when I first got the kit and he said the 40 would be plenty (it's the big one). If all else fails I have a 61 as well. According to the plans it's 698 sq.
Thanks,
James

Jim, go with the big engine. The plane is huge. I have seen Gordon's version in person and it is huge. I would say the .51 would be the smallest engine to even think about.
Now Gordon is a prolific builder and can finish light. Look him up on here or thru John Miller in members lists. Type in full name and you will find it sooner. Send them a PM or E-Mail. They are terrific gentlemen. DOC Holliday

Hi James,
When this first hit, I missed it, sorry! I would normally agree with bigger is better, but in this case, I am going with Randy Smith. The PA 40 you have will power basically any plane that a ST G51 will, if set up and run properly. I have had some VERY, VERY good ST G51s and also we have a PA 40. So I can say the PA 40 will do the job. it ain't your Grandma's 40! LL~ LL~ A PA 40 will fly the old ST 60 planes with no problems up to the 70 oz. range. Now, a PA 51 will do even more! And the PA 61 will not even know it is running...... ;D

I also have the Umland kit. I plan to use a Magnum 53 in mine, though a PA 40UL may get the call if it comes out nose heavy. The PA 40UL has plenty of grunt.
