I use what ever clear dope that I am using for a substrate.  Usually Nitrate.

What Bill say's.. I usually use nitrate dope also. I put three coats of dope on the wooden surface, sanding between coats, then stick them down using more nitrate dope. All of the coats should be thinned about 50 percent dope and 50 percent thinner.  Thia will soak into the wood better.  Best of luck...Gil AKA "Bootlegger"

Also, I just thought of it.  Maybe you already know, but I always apply the hinges before I cover the wing and flaps.  This helps to hide them petty well.  If you want to get fancy, you can apply spacling compund or some other putty around the hinges and feather them out before you cover.  The hinges disappear then.
