Title: Checker board silkspan
Post by: Gordon Tarbell on December 09, 2007, 09:20:41 PM
Would like to find source for checkerboard silkspan to finish this .020 powered bipe so I can start next project. I have tried most all of the craft shops and Hallmark type shopes around the Sacramento area to no avail. I would like black and white, or red and white, but am willing to consider others at this point. Its the little bipe that minisota modeler sells kits for .

I think that will be a tough one. I have done in what is in my mind an extensive search and I ran across a couple of listings for a Nascar type large checkerboard with great big checks in black and white only. This was some time back. Not sure now.
I too was looking for some checks in a small pattern like you are no doubt after. Could be the only answer will to be to color the checks somehow onto plain white.

could you cover the whole model with white then cut squares of red and dope them onto the other tissue?

It is not too difficult to print your own on an inkjet printer.  For that small a plane, you can do standard page size sheets.  Spray a piece of paper with Photo adhesive cement - very light coat from a distance.  Let it dry a bit and press your silkspan down onto it.  Use a low ink setting or the color will run all over the place.  When you are done, brush the back of the backing sheet with paint thinner, kerosene, lighter fluid, etc to get the glue to release.

FWIW, there's checkerboard silk, and checkerboard tissue, but in 55+ years of this hobby, I've never seen or heard of silkspan that was available with checkerboard. Or even colored, unless it was custom dyed by the modeler. And yes, I've done that, and wouldn't do it again. There's a better way, thankfully. Yes, it would work for checkerboard pattern, if you can deal with all the masking tape. It would encourage one to make the squares bigger...  D>K Steve

This is the time of the year when there are an abundance of R/C Swap meets around. Look in the AMA magazine classifieds under the Non-Flying events. I have a drawer full of good silk I've gotten at these shows. There is plenty of dry-rot silk out there too, so do be careful. I don't have any checkerboard, or polka dots because I don't have the kind of patience to apply those!

HAPPY HUNTING!  :-*

Hi Steve,

I use 1" masking tape for my checkerboards.  It takes two maskings to get all the checkerboard completed. (and a couple rolls of tape!) But, it is the quickest and pretty much fool proof.  I mean think about it, I can do it!
