I am building a ringmaster and thought I might use a carbon fiber rod instead of a bolt or metal wire for mounting the bell crank. I know the bolt or metal rod is much stronger but the distance between the plywood mounts is so short, about and inch or a little longer, that it seems in order to break a carbon rod that short, the ribs would give way first under the pressure. Thought I might save some weight. Has anyone done this with success?

I would not do this. Use piano wire

Ditto what Robert said. The CF rod would be prone to wear.

What Jim said -- CF will wear much more quickly than metal would. It's such a small bit, you're not adding that much weight.

Thanks for the help. I will use metal.
