Title: Canopy for Chipmunk
Post by: Randy Powell on August 27, 2007, 04:28:14 PM
Is there a source for a Jim Van Loo Chipmunk canopy? I'm looking for a replacement canopy for a Walter Umland kit.

Hi Randy,
I would check with Bill Sawyer of Windancer Models because he lists a Chipmunk canopy that I believe is for the Van Loo version and not the newer Sig version of the Chipmunk. I vaguely remember talking with him when I was  buying a kit from him and I think he told me he made the canopies  for guys in the cottage kit business so he may be the guy who made the canopy
for Walter.  I may be wrong about that, but in any event, Bill may be your best bet for a good canopy.   Hope that helps.  Bill is in the Vendor section of this forum.
                                                       Good luck,

I'm told no. But it could be. I thought that maybe Bill Sawyer might have them.

Thanks Pat.

Hi Randy,
Bill Saywer was at the Huntersville contest and he was selling some canopies as seconds at a reduced price. The flaws were minute and I had to look really closely to spot them so I suspect his first grade canopies should be of very good quality.
Like I said I could be probably be completely wrong about Bill producing canopies for other kit makers. I just don't know for sure.

The Van Loo canopy shape is very different than the new Sig Chipmunk canopy and any generic canopy shape that I have seen so I hope the one Bill sells is the one your looking to find.

Bill lists it in the vendor area. This was for a friend that did an unscheduled inverted landing with his Walter Umland Chipmunk. Rudder, nose and canopy were sort of rearranged. He was hoping to find a new canopy then repair the rest of the plane.

Hi, Randy,
I have an Umland canopy for you. Send me your address, and I'll get it to you.

To clear up any questions about my canopies. I produce a Chipmunk canopy. It is a copy of the canopy that is in the Sig CL3 kit that was designed by Jim Van Loo and modified by Mike Stott. The box says 1969 stunt winner. I did not produce the canopies for Walter Umland's kit of the Chipmunk.

Bill H.,

The canopy is for Pet Peterson. He's looking for one to replace the original after an inverted landing on the pavement.

Bill S.,

I thought that the CL3 canopy would probably work.
