Dare use CA for motor mounts ?

Here i sit again mixing some slow set epoxy for motor mounts on my new stunter all the while eyeballing that bottle of thick CA at the end of the table! Has anyone dared to use CA for mounts? The pics in the Brodak plans use it for everything it seems. Wonder about 5 years down the road if it will still hold this fox .35 in place?

hi Ray,

Windy used thick CA in one of his stunters.  His taped showed that he used CA on everything for that build.  Can't remember the  name of the plane, though.

I cannot bring myself to do it! LOL!!

     I don't know, but 22 years down the road it's still holding my 40VF. Is using CA on the motor mounts breaking some sort of rule?

     People used to glue airplanes together with Duco Cement and Ambroid, CA is much better than those.

CA is strong, but brittle.  I had a firewall separate because of vibration.  I'm lucky I don't now sing soprano!  Not a propblem with epoxy, which is strong and tough.

I've certainly used CA to glue motor mounts. Haven't had a problem yet.

I've used it before on profiles. Never had one come apart (yet).

There are different CA's for different parts of construction.  I have several planes that were built using the thin, medium and gap filling CA.  As with any glue, it will not make up for sloppy work.   H^^

There is not a problem using C/A for that type of construction. All that you need to remember is that it is not fuel proof to alchohol based fuels. Proper fuel proofing renders that a non issue.

  Sure, CA will stick just about anything to anything! In my experience it is fine for joints that don't flex or vibrate too much. For joints that do, remember that CA is BRITTLE in its set state and it does crack.
  I have a 1/4 scale Tiger Moth that is all CA joints. You can heat the joints fail on deadstick landings, so much so, that I dare not fly it anymore! Like any glue, CA has its place, but should be used in the places that is best for it. Me? I shall use epoxy for engine mounts!

FWIW, i just got a beautiful kit from RMS "Eric Rule" of the Thunder Gazer and in the overview instructions written by David Fitzgerald he used all three CA's but,but recommends not using the accelerator as it makes the CA brittle, unless i missed it, he never mentions epoxy. y1 Ron.

CA works fine. I use it for everything on the plane. I never told anyone about it because I was worried about being scolded. I spray the inside of the rngine compartment when I'm painting the plane and have always either sold or crashed the plane. Not once has a CA joint failed.

You have just been given the secret to using C/A glue effectively. NEVER and I do mean NEVER use accelerastor for any c/a glue that your using. it kicks it so fast it becomes crystaline.

interesting!  Watch "how to build Ibeam Wings" with Bill Werwage - he uses it on pretty much ALL the joints in the wing he builds in the video......I am sure he doesn't know a thing about building tho S?P
