Ringmaster Bipe - 1099 sq inches
« on: July 06, 2012, 02:23:21 PM »
I'm building a prototype Ringmaster Bipe that has a 63" wingspan and 1099 sq inches. Here are some pictures of the beginning of the build.

First picture is the two packages of wood that came from Pat.

Second picture is what was left after all parts had be seperated from their sheets. Enough to build a regular Ringmaster.

Third pix is one of the spars being glued together.

Fourth is the ribs being placed on the spar and trailing edge.

Top wing all framed up.

Fuselage pieces laid out and ready for construction.

Engine for this beast is a K&B 61 set up and muffler built by Scott Riese.

Tail feathers framed up and the next pix they are finished and ready to be hinged.

Hi Brother Larry!

The Bipe is looking good.  Should be a very good flying Ringmaster!  I have fixed up my old Pontiac van so that if I want to build a giant sized Ringmaster I will have a way to haul it.

Larry,

Nice build!

This giant Ringmaster? Has it been done before or did you have it scaled up that large?

Nice tongue muffler, polished by you? Custom muffler made by who?

I need a custom made tongue muffler, I have no idea who makes them?

I think I have the Ringmaster lettering and logo in vinyl? I may have made one some years back, I'll check my art file.

If I find the art, would you be interested in a vinyl or mask? No charge!

Hi Charles,

As Brother Larry stated, Scott Riese made the muffler.  Scoot is a member here and a search of the members will give you his contact info.  He is very reasonable as to the cost of his work and he usually has a quick turn around.

Oh, yeah, Brother Larry, I am not sure I can budget out enough money to "BUILD" one of the huge Ringmasters! LL~ LL~  It looks like it takes a small balsa forest to just frame one up! LL~ LL~

Bill,

Thanks for the info.

Ringmaster construction question?

I see the center spar is notched up/down for every other rib. One rib slides in from one side then another rib slides in from the other side.

Seeing all the ribs and spar gets glued, would it make a difference if only one side of the spar was notched for ribs, sliding in from one side only?

Bill,

you could always build one of these. 61.5 in W/S with 895 sq in wing area. Consider it a change from a ringmaster. Designed also by Pat King with the same construction techniques.

I don't think it would be as strong and it didn't take long to get the ribs onto the spar.

Fuselage pictures. I also made pads from 1/8" aluminum for extra strength on the motor mount. Picture of the fuselage and bottom wing dummied in.

Larry,

Nice work and great photos.

That fuselage looks like my International fuselage the way it's hollowed out.

Could have been a built up fuse?

No rudder off set? Interesting.

Nice work, great photos!

Color scheme yet?

HI Charles,

The "modern" thought is to not use any rudder offset.  We do not want the model to be yawed out since it helps kill off too much speed in maneuvers.  The overhead "8" will really be hammered if too much offset is used.  We try to get the model to fly as tangent to the circle as possible.  If any offset is used it is a tiny amount to insure no "inset".

LE stock before shaping.

Weight box installed on the bottom wing. I installed it on top because this thing would a bear to turn over to add or subtract weight.

Wing and fuselage epoxied together.

The Ringmaster 1000 takes up more space, but square inch wise this is the largest. No color scheme yet, haven't even decided on one for the SWIFT.

Larry,

I don't know about others but the top wing looks to high for aesthetic appearance and maybe good flying. Could be an optical illusion from the camera angle.

I sure am enjoying you build thread keep at it October is not that far away!!  y1

Finally getting back on the bipe. Finished sanding, filling and primering getting ready to cover the bottom wing silk.
Finished covering today and will be putting the first clear on the silk to tightening it up. Will start finishing up the top wing as I'm at a stopping point on the fuselage. I'm waiting for the Tom Morris controls from CLC so I can install the horizontal stab.

Tom Morris controls were received and have been put in, or at least the mount has been installed and the stab epoxied in place. Next two pictures are showing the complete assembly dummied up to see what she will look like. Still have top wing to cover.

Thanks Brad. Wings are covered with silk and other parts are silkspan, old skool. Actually this was my first bipe too. Great kit, all balsa is excellent. I've told Pat King that I have ham hands and spent a lot of time repairing parts that I broke while building. Still used to the old Sterling die crunched kits.

K&B 61 with tongue muffler from Scott Riese. What was funny, we all thought the 1000 with the same engine combo would pull your arm off. But it was no worse than a 40 size stunt ship. Joe Gilbert was the test pilot last year at the roundup.

Charles

Looks like the ribs have cutouts for spars top and bottom, so the sheet spar just becomes the back of the D-tube.  An easy way to do it, heck of a lot easier than fitting 25-50 webs in each wing.

I've talked to Pat about the spar. Would be easier if the spar was notched the same, this is the first one being built.
