Brodak "Original" Nobler
« on: November 09, 2016, 03:05:06 PM »
I recently acquired a die-cut kit of the Brodak Nobler. Has anyone built and flown this version. Is it worth all the extra work involved? John Brodak states in the booklet it is the most complex kit he ever offered and it is for experienced builders. I'm not  NOVICE but don't know if i'm ready for this one yet. I have built two full body stunt planes barnstormer and a legacy 40, but this looks a lot more involved.

Thoughts.

I did one...you don't build it ...you carve it!

If you don't think your ready yet, then wait !! But when you do build it, read and understand the dirrections before you glue !! If you have any questions just ask !! someone will be happy to help. And yes it's worth it !! Have fun !!

My Brodak Nobler got me a special prize at the NATS one year.  The last time I flew it the engine was giving me problems.   It came in on me on the reverse wingover and crossed the circle.  When it hit the end of the lines the inboard wing was destroyed.  Was going to trash it, but De Hill took it off my hands.   Yes there is some carving of blocks, but no harder to build than the Green Box Nobler.

I built what may be a later version of the kit, all the parts laser cut. I think the only unusual feature is that the center sheeting is doubled (2 layers). I carved bucks for molding all the top and bottom pieces, intending to make more later for other modelers (which I did). But carving the kit's blocks is not hard, using a small model-builders wood plane. If you can build a Legacy 40 you can certainly build a Nobler! I say go for it!

Is yours the version with the severely asymmetrical wing with 2" of difference? The "51-52" Nobler, aka "Original," has a little more wing area than the later '57 version since the tips are narrower compared with the later version. Same square inches but more airfoiled flying surface on the early version.

Rich I've seen your level of craftsmanship and you can build this model. What I would suggest is that you don't focus on the complexity of the "whole" model. For example :Start by building one part of the model and get it done. Then take a break from it for a few days then move on to another....and so on and so on. I always like to start with the wing.
The other day you mentioned that you didn't have a Dremel tool or jig saw. I would strongly suggest you purchase those items for this project or any future models.I don't know how anyone could build without them.

That version of the Nobler is a terrific flyer and when finished allows you to fly in PA, OTS Phase 2,and Classic with only one airplane.

Rich, we have a great club with some of the most respected builders and flyers around. I'm certain that anyone of the guys will help you thru the project.Don't be shy...

Sometimes it's a bit unnerving when you open the kit box and see all of that wood, but the effort is worth it when you're out there flying the pattern with a real Aldrich Nobler....Your Pal PhillySkip
