Title: Balsa Scrap or???
Post by: GEOFFREY on December 31, 2007, 09:11:55 AM
annual kind of straighten out the shop. i don't know if i am by myself on this?  Balsa leftovers, short pieces of  Dowels, brass, fuel line. . AT what point do we  trash  a small piece of 3/32 so that the  next time you need a small gusset you don't have to cut into a whole  sheet. .i hope i am not the only one sitting at my bench with my balsa stripper cutting cap strips  for the next 20 aircraft i MIGHT need them for. Happy New Year to you all. maybe i have spent to much time in the shop.Does anyone still bowl ????  Geoffrey  back to the shop

I'm one of those who has a hard time getting rid of the scraps!  I have a shelf full of pieces of balsa of the  "I could use that some time" variety, a box of plywood scraps,  a box for brass strips and tank material, a box for brass and alum tubing, and a couple of boxes of leftover metal scraps from my lathe and mill.

BTW, I still bowl, once a week in the old-folks league from the senior penal colony I live in.  I wish I could still bowl the way I remember (or imagine) I could!

Yea, I go through my scrap shelf every so often and weed out the pieces most like not to be used. It can be a tough choice. As said, I hate to cut into a new sheet for some little gusset or something. So I keep a lot of what is probably junk around. But it does get used. Just not as much as I accumulate.

Wow, I struggle with this continually. I have saved cubic feet of scrap and sometimes I even remember to go through it before I cut a new part out of a new sheet. Its very frustrating since the price of balsa has gone up so much. I've never been able to bring myself to toss more then a couple pieces at a time.

I have an old Magnum box FULL of balsa scraps, and please don't take this as my bragging, but I go through it all the time for small parts, and all too often I end up in the new balsa cabinet for a bigger chunk because the scrap box comes close but not close enough. ~> S?P
I try from time to time to reduce the amount in the scrap box, but it's almost like kicking my dog!  Ain't gonna happen!  HB~> :!
Blessings,
Will

Often I can go through the scrap box and find little pieces to replace kit wood that I have deemed to heavy (or in a few cases to light). I have a really hard time chucking any wood larger than 2" square. I do the same thing with MonoKote. It's kind of a sickness, really.

Quote from Ty - I have as much as the Leester or maybe even more. Guys, there "ain't no such a thing" as SCRAP balsa, just odd sizes.  LL~  I have built entire planes from my odd sized balsa. Lots of 4-65 pound stuff lurking there. D>K H^^
Also more than one trainer as morfed out of that pile.  y1

Ty - do you really have some 65 pound stock?  I need to brace up a sagging door on my outer shop.
Blessings,
Will
