Another Ringmaster?
« on: June 11, 2014, 04:34:32 PM »
Finally! After a couple years, I have another "Ringmaster". First flight will be at Gilroy HS this Sunday if I can get the rest of the "Circle Jerks" to come out and fly with me.  Z@@ZZZ

OS FP 20, 9X4 APC, all the usual stuff.

Wt. = 26 oz, yeah, yeah, I know Sparky, too heavy! LL~ LL~ LL~

Mine is 34oz with that motor, and has placed in Classic in local contests.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Is that maybe an original Stirling kit? I see it has the old-timey ply elevator horn. Nice effort. You are bound to get a few Jerks to come out for its maiden. This is the kind of thing Kim would have liked.

Nice job Jerry, like the paint scheme. Is the wing covered in polyspan? And tell Larry I expect to see him at the contest next week...or else.  <=

Hi Mike & Pete,

Actually I scratch built it. Took a few liberties that I'll tell you about at Woodland next week (or 2?)

LE is hollowed out via table saw to a parabolic shape same as outside about 5/32" thick. Ribs have a parabolic curve to fit the LE and the TE (and spar) is laminated. Unfortunately I used very light wood and it was still wimbly IMO so I coated the TE with CF veil and that stiffened it up a bit. The best stiffener was putting 1/8" CF tubes on top and bottom of the spar. They can be seem through the Poly Span.

Yes Pete, it's Poly Span and I think that's all I'm going to use from now on out.............unless something better comes along. y1 It takes a bit of finesse to get it to go around corners but it can be done!

I'll use CF veil on all (or most) solid parts on new builds.

Thanks for the comments, Jerry

PS: I love to laminate..........Guess it's from my old glider competition days.

I don't know where you'd go to see plans, but to make a light, straight, rigid LE for a Ringmaster, a nifty way to do it is to mold the leading edge from sheet, then back it up with shear webbing to make a mini D-tube.  That gives you nearly as much stiffness in both bend and torsion as a solid-balsa LE, with much less weight.

Of course, backing that up with some CF will make it even stiffer...

Tim,

I thought about doing that but cutting out the center was easier and faster.  ??? Faster? My plane sat on the bench for a couple years.....

I used a straight formed LE (not the lightest in the world) and when I was done it was still straight and half of the original weight (more or less)

If yours flies great at 30 something oz's then this one should fly good at 26 although I might have to add some tail weight. (Darn, there I go with that "W" word, sorry Sparky)

It balances on the back of the LE, which might be a little to far forward. We'll see Sunday.

Cheers, Jerry

I have heard of a under 20 ounce Ringmaster. I wonder what the lightest one ever was. And how well it flew.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Looking at your color scheme has given me some ideas for the Super Ringmaster and Ringmaster Imperial I am trying to finish.  Both covered with poly-span(now called Poly-T on Stunt Hobby Shop).   On the Brotherhood of the Ring forum I had some pictures of the leading edge I did for the S-1 Ringmaster and it matches the log in the kit except for weight.   It took some trial and error to get the riblets the right size.   The Super Ringmaster has one of the built leading edges and I have another ready for another S-1.   Right now I have two S-1's and a Stuntin Ringmaster in the Ford waiting to be flown again.  By the way did I say I like the color scheme.

Thanks Doc.

I flew it last week end and it flew fine. Only problem was the engine was/is spewing oil out of the main bearing (Old FP 20) and I'm going to put my newer FP 20 ABC on it.

Cheers, Jerry

If your want to play with the old OS 20 FP & get the very last few flights out of it.  A shallow spiral groove cut in the crankshaft will pump (screw) the excess oil back down the shaft.   RH or LH spiral,  that I do not remember as one moves the oil out the other moves it back in.  Clearly it has seen better days.  Good looking RM & wonderful weight it should fly very well.
