Title: Another Magnum in Progress 2
Post by: Greg L Bahrman on June 13, 2006, 08:32:45 PM
Progress is slow but we got the bottom sheeted and the fuse covered in veil. The veil made a big difference in the stiffness of the sheeting. I have been considering painting the fuse and monocoating the wings to save weight. Your thoughts         n~

Robert,
If I paint it all, should I silkspan the wings or continue with the veil?? Also will the dope (sig) penetrate the 1/16 balsa and damage the foam ??

Brush 2 coats un-thinned clear on the wings. Apply 00 silkspan and 2 more coats unthinned clear sand and switch to 50/50 clear. CF only goes on the fuse.

Greg,

What did you use to glue the sheeting onto the foam cores? Epoxy Hopefully!

If you have done a good job at fitting your wing skins as it looks you have, matched up LE & TE, then filled your wing sheeting in places where needed, there shouldn't be a problem with the dope over the sheeted foam wing.

3 coats of 50/50 clear Dope and put down the carbon. If you have any reservations about the clear and a reaction on the foam core, then dust on the first coat.

All my previous Magnums have had silkspan & dope finishes without any problems.

$kote should be a last resort, I would think!

Thanks Robert and Mike,
I guess I'm committed now. I got one coat clear on the wings and will do another tomorrow.

Thanks Mike,
I bumped you up a karma for your good words. I got the wings covered with silkspan and sanded ready for primer. Still have to do fillets and other things but we are moving along. Just stuck together for show and tell.  Increased rudder area a little larger than stock. Anxious to see your progress also.  ~>

Looks good but it doesn't look like a Magnum anymore.  y1

Looks like a VERY nice job Greg. I really like the slight re-design! I'm also glad you took Sparky's advice, you'll be real happy that you painted it all in the end. Monokote is like chrome on motorcycles, just say NO. **)
