Carbon vail and Fiberglass
« on: September 13, 2012, 06:33:02 PM »
My brother in law and I were talking and he is planning to use carbon vail on his new Legacy.  He is using a ST .51 and was wondering if he needed to fiberglass the nose as well as using the carbon?

Thanks,

James

I would not think you would need both.   Either will work okay with a good epoxy.

Typically I think the carbon in put on with dope, not epoxy.

Hi James,

I build a scratch legacy, used carbon veil with dope. I running a ST 51 and it flys the plane very well. The carbon veil is very strong, if you put it on correctly. Remember to put three coats of clear on the wood than when you apply the carbon veil use clear with 90% thinner. When you sand the carbon be careful not to sand thru the carbon, cause if you do you'll have a lot of fun. Don't ask me how I know???

Good Luck and enjoy the Legacy cause shes a great flying plane!

Comparing .5 oz. FG applied with Z-Poxy to .2 oz CF veil applied with dope is not a good comparison.  The FG will be stronger.  Applying the CF veil with Z-Poxy is better than dope if you are looking for strength.
