Parts, parts and more parts (now with pics)
« on: June 04, 2008, 04:41:41 PM »
I'm finally getting around to finishing the PA plane that was all framed up like 5 months ago. After sidetracks into refinishing and building and finishing a couple of Classic planes, looks like I can finally get back to it. I had assembled the whole plane minus engine and put it in the rack and so, I took it all apart, put the main airframe in the holder hanging it out in the air and started building all the little jigs to hold parts for finishing. When I got done (like 3 hours later) I realized something. This plane may have the all time highest number of separate parts to finish. There are 15 parts including the main airframe for this thing. I should post a picture. 2 cowls, 2 flaps, 2 elevators, 4 hatches (two on the main airframe and 2 for the gear seats) and a 4 piece landing gear (that bolts together).

I suppose when I was building all this, the total just didn't occur to me. Man, this thing is complicated! When it's all finished, I hope I remember how to put it together. Could be like a Rubic's Cube.   HB~>

Don,

Not really so fast. This plane for framed up and ready to finish last September. Took me a bit to remember how it went together. It now has 3 coats of unthinned clear on it and I will start covering tonight. I hope to have it completed for perhaps the Raider Roundup but more probably the Fall Follies in Salem. But who knows? It may be done for McMinnville. Stranger things have happened.

I'm also in the process of drawing up my next PA plane.

Greg,

I have no idea what it will be called. It's the third version of the Slider. It is aerodynamically very similar to the last plane with some corrections that I discovered as I have flown the other one. Some ideas worked out really well, others not so much and so were dropped. Aesthetically, it's quite a bit different, but aerodynamically, not really. The plans have several names written on them and crossed off. The original name came from the TV series.  :)

Oh, by the way, the wings and stab are covered, Hope to get the fuse done today and start on all those pieces. At least the wheelpants are fiberglassed and don't need silkspan. That's something.

OK, it's all covered and has one coat of clear on it. I'll sand off the edges and slop on another coat then maybe post a picture.

Pro,

Yea, this the third in line on the design. The first was a pig and ended up as parts. The second I'm flying and it's a decent plane, but has a few quirks that I think I've figured out. This is the third. I think Paul's latest Impact is something like the 20th (or later) in the line dating back through For Reels, the Bad News group and Frustration's End. All have been developments in the design. So I don't feel too bad. This plane is pretty young in the design evolution.

OK, here are a couple of pictures. This is just covered with no clear on it. The edges are a bit ragged in places (what I'm cleaning up right now). So far, OK.

Randy,
I love your pipe tunnel design!  The scoop concept is right on for extra cooling and the extra exit openings insure that cooling will happen!  I'll probably steal that in a later ship!   n1 n1 H^^ H^^ H^^ H^^ S?P S?P

Will,

Steal away. The mounting is interesting. It sort of slides on into a slot and his held in place by two screws that rae inside the front cowl. I didn't plan it this way, it was just a improvsation. But it seemed to work out.

Randy,
I love improvization.  It produces more unique stuff than planning any day!  I play music the same way -who needs sheet music?  #^ #^ #^

Randy,

Fantastic work!  I am very interested in the finishing jigs you are using. Do you have a close up picture?

It's been a busy week so I haven't been able to get much done. It's all set for fillets, but I haven't been able to get out to the shop since Monday. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to work on it after the weekend. This weekend is Stunt-a-Thon, so I'll mostly be doing that.

Ty,

Aerodynamically, it pretty much the plane I'm flying with some corrections (read ideas on the current plane I dumped since they didn't work). Should be a nice ship. Projected all up weight, ready to fly minus fuel is 50-54oz. Should be a killer if it comes in at that.

Jim,

No, Clint never sleeps. Not this time of year.   LL~

Clint,

Well, I have a paint scheme pretty much worked out. Not like anything else you've see from me. Should be interesting, if a bit dark. Unfortunately, revelations from flying the current model last weekend call for some modification to the the leadout slider on the new plane (since it's largely the same design). It will require cutting into the end of the wing to do the work. But that's OK, it's still pre-primer, so any messing I have to do cutting into the silkspan can be easily repaired before I move on. Hope to have that done in the next few days (have to fix the original version first). Then I can move onto to fillets and primer. Hopefully, I can have it in primer by the weekend.
