Hi here are some pics of my new model. I sprayed the clear last night, so some sanding and buffing next week and it should be ok.
Cheers, Lauri

I also have to make the piston ring(s). It's something I'd love to leave to a specialist.. I hate it. L

Truly a masterpiece finish, Lauri. We are very happy and proud to have you here in Switzerland.
Best regards, Peter Germann

WOW! Craftsmanship at its finest. Truly a work of art.

Awesome and then make your own power plant.

Thanks for the beautiful pictures of your spectacular model. Marvelous workmanship!

To allow a new engine orientation, we had to re-design the crankcase. Now cylinder is tilted -40 degrees from horizontal but venturi still remains horizontal. Also, I went back to remote needle valve.
-
Redesigning the engine to fit the plane. Wow.
-
Well, we were anyway going to try a new material for crankcase, it was rather simple to do the changes in cnc program.
Because things get a bit more sensitive without nitro, I made a set of 10 venturies with 0,1mm (1/254") steps. From 4,1 to 5,0mm (0,16-0,196") dia. L

Looks really nice Lauri! Your new Rupes machine will make it even nicer!

I met Lauri in Poland at the 2014 World Championships. I was able to closely examine his model and engine that he competed with. He also makes his own props. The 3-blade prop he gave me is a work of art. I can attest that the photos he has posted here do not do justice to the outstanding craftsmanship and attention to details of his work. He is also a competent flier.
I need to mention that he was one of the several competitors there that stepped forward to provide help to Kenny Stevens be able to continue in the competition. We needed fuel components for the airplane that Kaz Minoto loaned Kenny. Lauri provided much of the fuel that we needed early on so that Kenny could practice. One of those many side stories that most people never hear about.

Seems like someone with your skillset and engineering expertise would come up with a variable throat venturi that would work for c/l stunt applications.

Dear Lauri,
Congratulations to your fine ideas, design and work!
Sorrowfully, we met each other only once in the life (maybe in Belgrad, 2009.), for a very short time.
I hope, we will have opportunity to speak again some time, somewhere, somehow...
Warmest greetings: Istvan Travnik

Allan,
Sure I've been thinking of it but so far haven't found an elegant and simple solution. Besides, making it like this makes it easier for myself to keep record of what I'm doing.
It takes only a few seconds to change the venturi, much less than removing the cowling and airfilter:)
Besides, cleaning is easier.
This is what the remote needle looks like. Well not really remote, it's just about 1/2" of fuel tubing between backplate and valve. I am not worried of my fingers, just like the idea of isolating the valve from engine heat and maybe vibration. And again, cleaning is easier.
I'd like to install the engine cut-off device between the valve and engine but it looks quite tight in there. Propably it'll be just before the valve.

This is how it is mounted, just in front of fuel tank:

Question:
I have been buffing the model parts. I bought this stuff from Brodak; Meguiars Swirl Remover.
What's the correct way to use it? The abrasive effect is allmost homeopathic and it leaves the surfaces sticky. I tried it with my buffing machine and ir sure shines nicely but only untill I wash tve parts with soap water.
Is it more like wax?

Try asking for advice at: http://www.meguiars.ch/ The are supposed to have an expert and have an on-line shop, too

Looks like you have an extra set of mounting lugs at front of crank case ? Nice feature.

Swirl remover is actually a glaze, not really intended to remove sanding scratches or anything. It is basically intended to use as a last step to "fill" the swirl marks left by polishing compound. I use a similar product right before appearance judging. I use a microfiber hand towel/washcloth to apply a small amount and disperce it over the surface, then go back and buff it similar to how you would in fact use wax. There is not really any cutting agents in this product, its mechanism of function is to fill the micro sized marks left by the abrasive in polishing compound thus leaving a more uniform surface to produce better reflections.

Gene,
Actually, I won't be using them, Rob forgot to remove the front lugs from the latest milling program.
I have found out that the engine sounds happier without front mounting, propably some deformation or resonance thing.
So, soon I'll take my biggest file and file them off. L
-
Thanks, Mark. That confirmed what I was allready thinking what it might be. Can I still put wax after it?
-
I personally would not,,
actually I seem to recall in situations the wax would be under the glaze,,
but I typically onlly use one or the other, not often both
-
Ok, it ended up like this. Ready to go -weight is 1630g, 57,5oz. If I can figure out the radio shut-off, it'll be about 15g more. But it's quite tight inside the nose. We'll see..
I ran the engine a little (started at 1st ever flick :)), seems to be nice and quiet. Tomorrow I'll run the 2 engines in and maybe fly a little, if weather allows.

Lauri,
Fine workmanship. H^^
Please, what clear did you use?
Charles

Thank you, Charles.
I use 2 component acrylic clear (for cars). Paint is 2 component polyurethane.
