Title: 3/16 th elevators
Post by: Leester on February 22, 2006, 02:31:34 PM
The plane I'm building has 1/4" stabilizer and 3/16th elevators. The plans show cutting out the area on the elevator where the horn legs go and putting in 3/16 th ply. Well for no good reason I didn't do it, I just epoxyed the horn legs in the elevator as usual. Now I'm having secound thoughts(a little late I know) If I put 1/64th ply on both sides of the elevator at the horn leg position will this be adequite ? Remember forum rules no zingers for being stupid.

Before you add ply, use a pin or new #11 blade and poke a bunch of holes in the would all around the wire joiner, top and bottom.  Soak the wood with thin CA.  If that isn't hard enough, when it drys, add the thin ply top and bottom.

Thin CA will really wick into soft wood and harden it up.

Yes Bill he knoweth. I just did it and it seems harder than the ply, well at least as hard.
