What plans are you using?  Or did you scratch build those, too?

Have you built from a kit before?  Building from plans is just like building from a kit, except that instead of cursing the wood that comes with the kit you have to cut out all those @#$% ribs -- but there's ways and ways.

What are your goals?  Just something flyable?  Something as good as the last kit you built?  Something better?  Better how?

One tip that I'll give you right now, because I'm still learning it's power, is that if you want to build light then you should weigh every piece of wood you use, and you should think about how heavily stressed that piece of wood is going to be in the final assembly.  Do that, and you'll automatically start sorting out the heaviest (strongest) wood for spars, the medium stuff for ribs, the light stuff for sheeting, etc.  Your plane will end up lighter, as if by magic.

Don't get disappointed when you screw up -- we all do.  And keep us posted -- there's a lot of builders on this forum!

Its real funny you posting this today.  I had dug out of my plans stash, a profile Fury I had designed back in the mid-80's, just last night! LOL  Hadn't looked at them in years1  I hope you post pics of your build. H^^

normally build from kits but doesn't seem to be any fury kits made. so ....always wanted to scratch and winters here so thought here we go. scratched out a plan and hoping for something that flys and resembles a sea fury. rd

I would tell you "Oh man, you don't want to scratch build from your own plans".  But then I got to thinking, and I realized that for the first ten years that I scratch built planes, I only built them from my own plans!

You will learn about plane design this way, that's for sure.

God luck with it, Russ!  I am sure you are using moments, etc., that are known for the size model you are doing.  As long as that is in the "plans" then you should have a pretty decent model, at least!  it is a plane I have often considered, but never took the time to work on.

I wish Al would make his Sea Fury plans available........ he says it is "too complicated".  Maybe, maybe not!  Some of us having been building for a LONG time! LL~

well here's first fuse take......  resemble a fury? sorta of ?  ??? oh well gotta start somewhere. wing is almost done. cutting ribs was not as bad as i figured  but full fuse was way more than my patience can take!! rd

Keep it up, Russ.  It will be a neat thing to take it out and fly it knowing that you actually did everything to make it work.
