More annoying dope queries.
« on: May 16, 2007, 12:55:13 AM »
  G'day folks,
A while back I posted a few questions in regards to dope types.

The other day a mate ordered a gallon of Randolph thinner to compliment the Randolph butyrate dope he is about to use. Instead of sending him the thinner they sent him shrinking nitrate dope. I bought the dope off him as he believes 2 gallons will probably outlast his grand children. ;D

I was wondering what specific tasks it will be suited to?

I know some guys use shrinking nitrate for open bays and non shrinking nitrate on balsa as a primary sustrate before moving to butyrate for colour coats and finish.

Can I use it without major dramas for the entire substrate and grainfiller?

I intend to use grey acrylic primer and go straight to 2-pack base coat and clear as coloured dopes are not available here.

I have found it hard to get motivated on building for a while because the only easily available type of dope is rubbish and I want to get a couple of planes finished to a decent standard before starting on a couple of new projects.

Any thoughts would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

 Rob.

Rob,

I don't know what the ordering situation to your area is, from the USA. There are a few products here that might help make the tautening Randolph better for your purposes:

Dave Brown's Flex-All reduces tautening "power" considerably...

Brodak offers a "retarder" - basically something that delays curing its butyrate dopes... Best for temperature/humidity adjustments...

Free flighters used to recommend 'some' castor oil per quart, unthinned, butyrate, to prevent excessive shrinkage on their flimsier structures... I think it was up to about a fluid ounce (~25cc) per unthinned quart(0.947 l) - if you could get it all to mix in.

If the Dave Brown or Brodak products are not certified hazardous flammables, shipping charges might be acceptable.

  Thanks Lou.
I had heard about the castor in the dope trick, I knew it took some of the brittleness out of the finish but wasn't aware that it could also reduce the shrinking power.

I will try contacting Dave Brown products and Brodaks and if that proves difficult as far as hazmat goes then I will try the old castor in the dope trick.

 Thanks again, Rob.

Hi Rob,

Check with automotive paint suppliers. They have "flex additives" that work in our paints.  It might be cheaper for you to buy som eof that instead of having to pay the added shipping charges for something from the US.  They are not cheap, but you get a lot!  I have been using a product from PPG for many years now.  Don't know if I will EVER use up the quart! LOL!!

  Hi Bill,
Just found out that one of the blokes I fly with here has been using Randolph shrinking nitrate for a while without problems. Just thins it 50/50.

I went to see the better (service wise) local auto paint shop about some flex additive yesterday.
Like you said, It's expensive. About $66 for 500ml.

One of the better local builders here uses the same dope but adds a few drops of castor to his last couple of coats before going to primer and then 2-pack auto colours/ clear. His models last for years.

I will try this on my latest creation and see how things pan out.

 Thanks again, Rob.

Hi Rob,

I think you will be fine with your suggested program!  Castor oil in the dope does act as a flexative, and slightly reduces the shrinking ability.

My last Classic ship I just used Nitrate as a filler.  Built up the substrate, did a LOT of sanding between coats, papered it, then filled it with Nitrate.  After final sanding and finishing (using automotive acrylic lacquer) no grain has showed up in about 5 years so I don't think it ever will!  Nitrates do appear to have a higher solids content, but weight was nil.

Thanks gents, I think I will go with a dash of castor oil to begin with.

Frank, It took me a while but hey I might just be a little slow.

When I say I'm a dope fiend at work the other guys can't work it out. I turn up on time every day and don't call in sick very often.  LL~

 Cheers, Rob.
