« on: April 15, 2009, 12:25:27 PM »
I would like to nominate the following person for Stunt Grunt, although he is now deceased he really did pursue Stunt in the Grunt type vigor.

The person nominated is:  Mike Thompson WAM member and Nats contestant from 1969-1973

Here he is in all his Glory at the Nats

Don,

I would really, really like to see some pictures of his '72 and '73 Airplanes.  '72 was a 68 Gieseke Nobler
and in '73 it was a '71 Silhavy Gypsy, they were both beautiful airplanes, he had many kids asking if they
were made of plastic!

Don,

That plane is Jim Silhavy's, Mikes had a much different paint scheme that was designed by his Mother who was the Art department chairman at his High School, Thomas Downey, the same one that I and George Lucas went to...

Don,

No that's not Mike's either, His had a silver base and red and blue trim that was kind of integrated onto the wing from the fuselage and separate red striped on the front and aft fuselage sides.

Colors were Sig Silver, Miami Blue and Folkker Red.

I think the fact that it says "JIM SILHAVY" in inch high letters on the side is a tipoff!

Jim.. LL~ LL~ LL~
I was just razzin you...I took this shot with when Al Rabe and I knocked on Silhavy's motel room where he and his wife were unpacking all his toy airplanes...and this model is Silhavy's FAI Red Japanesseeee' tissued and clear coated Gypsy.
I then took a slide of Rabe holding the Gypsy and Silhavy holding Al's Bear Cat.

Jim flew the Red Gypsy that year...at that time the FAI model didn't have any test flights to speak of and was trimmed to his liking.
Beautiful light weight Gypsy and  truly a work of art.
