I met Bob Baron at a contest when I first came to California many years ago. He was flying that unusual white in-line Avanti in Expert. Bob Whitely was coaching his protege in Beginner which I flew, I greased the landing on the main wheels on purpose-I won it. The late John Poynter of foam wing fame was there. I remember stopping and staring at Bob for a long time and saying to myself, "so this is the Humbug guy". Nice memories

At one of the KOI's I judged years ago there was Bob with his little Hum-Bug ,Bill Rich and Tom Dixon plus some others that I have forgotten. Bill Rich won that day but Bob wanted to know what he did on each trick. I had been talking several hours with Bob be for that flight and he explained all his ideas about the plane and aeronautics. Here is the plane he flew that day to 2nd place.

Hi Eddy - Yeah, those are my pictures on that site of the Baron Humbug 60 I have. Owen Richards has the orange Humbug 60 that has big center span flaps now.

I bought mine from Tom Dixon shortly after Bob passed and is currently hanging in-doors in our 3rd bedroom (a special privilage for any stunter) and hasn't been flown in quite some time. It would need a thorough flush and checkup first if you really wanted to take her for a spin Eddy.

It fly's pretty conventionally, and feels quite normal at the handle, which surprizes everyone who has flown it.

That is the humbug I remember. I was looking at the plane when Bob walked up and started explaining what the airplane was about and why the engine was so small compared to every one else. I flew combat and raced so I didn't have any idea what he was talking about. This was the first time I had ever seen Monokote Bob was mad because he didn't get any appearance points. This was the first stick on monokote when I got back home I monokoted a Goodyear wing and picked up almost five MPH. That taught me slick finishes worked for fast air planes maybe a few more coat's of clear on my combat planes.

Great picture of Bob with the Walker Cup.  Bob always flew great but there were two times he totally kicked everyone's butts.  This Nats was one and the other was a Team Trials when he came out on top and nobody else was in the same neighborhood.  Wish I could remember what year that was and what airplane he flew.

I think it was the 1981 Team Trials, with his Avanti (the one that got published in Flying Models shortly thereafter, IIRC).

Likely correct, Mike.  They all sort of get caught up with one another 40 years later!

There are many photos in Stunt news 2009 -2010 in the Les McDonald Stiletto articles. Some images from the Nats and Worlds from the 70's through the 80's A great read I may say.
