Thanks for all the input for a new heading change...and especially to Robert Schroeder.

The Stunt Grunt theme didn't seem quite the handle...for such a column that was in place to uplift a memory of those days gone by or those special times, places and faces that are on your mind that you would like to share a story, photos or more?

So instead of BYE, BYE!... OPPPPS!' hopefully Sparky or someone with puter-skills can make the correction to AS TIME GOES BY for us.

I guess the new heading is more appropiate as not very many like being called a grunt.

Maybe a "grunt" could explain how the powers-that-be ruling this forum suddenly changed me from Ensign to Lieutentant, skipping j.g.? Do they frock?

"Frock" is (or was) a USN term for early advancement in rank, without the required time in grade. When they promoted me here from Ensign to Lieutenant I skipped over Lieutenant, junior grade (j.g.). Nothing else intended, Admiral, sir.

In 2003 I had a gilligan hat airbrushed at the State Fair. Ithad p51 on top and Stunt Grunt painted on the front. I thought I had coined a phrase! None the less I would not be offended, wore mine to the Nats, TT or something in Muncie. Anywho...it got some attention!

Yep, all of the hassles and new responsibilties, without the extra pay. What a concept! Would the bonus-boys on Wall Street be so humbled?

I was only a few miles from becoming a shellback when our orders got changed for some mystic reason and the Essex turned around and we came back north all the way to Halifax. Figure that one out?! (We were on a middy cruise.)

Hi Will--My great uncle Johnny McCulloch was a navigator on the Essex during WW2. His Wog Day lasted three days! Mine was only one. Egads, I was so filthy after it ended that I just threw my clothes overboard and scrubbed in the shower until they dragged me out. After that we were rationed two (2) beers each. First adult beverage in months and boy did they taste real good. Some guys were selling theirs for $20 each.

HaHaHa!! Wog Day? If you're in the USN (or USMC and be TDY on a Navy ship) and CROSS THE EQUATOR, you have to be, ahem...."inducted", shall we say, from the ranks of the Slimy Polywogs (non-crossers) into the ranks of the Trusty Shellbacks (crossers). Lotsa time spent on your hands and knees, for openers---

I'm not supposed to say much about it, not even sure if it's still allowed anymore in these PC days (does anyone know?). I believe it started in the Royal Navy many moons ago, and the tradition carried over into the USN. An official entry was made in your Bupers (personnel) file when you became a Trusty Shellback, so if you were still a Slimy Polywog when you crossed the equator, the command already knew about it, and there was no escape.

Somewhat unpleasant at times, but generally a lot of fun.

Hmmmmm. "Inducted" My. Chad, that seems like a very gentle and kind reference to what we were threatened, oh, excuse me, PROMISED with on our way! My outfit (VS39) was one of the last to be deployed on the Essex, she underwent overhaul in 1961 in Norfolk and we had an extended NAS Qounset Point stay while training on the new S2F threes we were getting then. All solid state electronics, etc, along with new power plants.
As far as I know, she became razor blades after her time as an anti-sub carrier. CVS-9 was deployed to the Cuban crisis while on her shakedown cruise in '62 and was part of the blockade. I was discharged 19 days early when she left because my time was so near being up. If I would have left on the cruise I would have gotten an automatic two year extension since avionics was a critical rate! Whew!

That would be an extremely appropriate song for this thread since the program of the same name plays the song, although not in the same manner. It's not for me to say,(no pun intended) but I don't know if it can be done.

Will, I very much enjoyed reading your memories of the Essex. It's funny-- I mean neat-- how those of us with military backgrounds can swap stories and "bond", even many years later, and between different generations.
