50 years ago VooDoo/Johnson C/S first flight
« on: April 11, 2012, 11:52:34 PM »
My first flight with VooDoo and Johnson C/S happened 50 years ago. Alot of blood/ sweat and tears since then.  What kind of binds this together is still have a flyable VooDoo in closet and several good Johnson's.  The VooDoo was set-up for a Fox .35 stunt.  I'll use a more modern ship for the Johnson's.  S?P Man the world has changed big time.  I came of age in the 60's and what a ride. Only bad part was the year in Viet-Nam.  Even had a new Plymouth Road Runner brand new in 69.

One great thing about this hobby is that we can actually build a plane that takes us back 50 years!  It can be a great feeling.

I, too, am a child of the '60s, and yes "what a ride"!

We sure had plenty of Voodoos around here 50 years ago, but very few Johnsons.  The leaders of the hobby favored the Fox and OS, or maybe a K&B, until the ST blew 'em all out of the water.

Whoops, only 45 years.  Even though Voodoos were plenty good enough, guys got bored and started using other stuff like Combat Cats, Wasps, and Swoops, mostly for variety.

My foray into fast planes back then was not with a combat plane, it was a "Clipped Wing" Goldberg Shoestring.  The plans showed how to reduce the WS to 38".  This one belonged to my buddy and it had an OS Max .35III w/restrictor removed and a 9-8 prop running on Missle Mist.  Way too fast for me at the time, but I kept it out of the dirt! LOL!!

Whaat a ride it has been, off and on.   62 was when Dad passed away and that fall moved back to KCK.   Had K&B .35 on pressure in a Combat Cat and Dad loved it.  He never built a model, but supported me as much as he could.   He could sit and watch combat all day.   He nevr got to see me win I got into competition.   But, him and Mom watched me take both events at a Flying Eagles Beginners meet. I remember circa 1961 when the plain bearing ST V35 came to town.

Everybody was struggling to break 100 MPH on .015" lines.  Then, all of a sudden anybody could do 115 and those that tried could do 120.

After a rash of line breakage, we went to .018" and put the field back to 100, even with the much-improved G21/35.  That was quite a "golden age", with anybody who spent $18 on equal footing.

I was happy to break 100+ mph with stock set-up. Yes there were latter improved engines but who cares?? I had a great ride and enjoyed all my time flying my johnson's. Man/ machine /time and place. Great fun and will do it again.  I have a stack of planes and two boxes of engines. One box 5 Fox c/s and one box Johnson C/S's. Parts to convert a FP-40/ LA .40 for speed limit combat ships. Maybe put a LA .25 in old VooDoo. It has a OS .25 F in it now.
