Will it work?
« on: May 04, 2014, 11:56:11 AM »
I have a Fox 36X (on suction), nice and tight motor.
I am getting back in CL flying after a few DECADES and
I have been given the chance at a new Brodak Cardinal Profile ARF
new in box at a great price.

Will the motor be enough for it?
I have also read about the bell crank./ lead out and control rod issues here
in the forum.
What is the bell crank length so that I can replace it and also the lead out wire size?

thanks in advance guys.

Probably not.  The 36X is basically a Fox 35 stunt beefed up and tuned for combat.  They run really well with the restrictor removed, leaned out on a small prop.  With the restrictor in place they're more miserable than a Fox 35 stunt.  The 36X won't like pretending it's a stunt engine, and when run in that fashion it won't have enough power to fly that plane well.  A modern 40-46 would really work better.  The 36X is a great fit on any number of vintage combat planes, I've got one of mine on a Voodoo that just loves to scream around the circle at 100mph.

Just to clarify, it's the leadouts, not the bellcrank, that are cause for concern. I don't know about the pushrods. I was unimpressed with the rear pushrod on my Oriental but those in the Vectors—my only other ARC/ARF models—are fine.

Hi Carl,

1. You could not have a better plane to get back into CL with. Mark is spot on, mine flew very well with the OS LA .46.

2. In addition to Andrews excellent advice, there is another reason not to use the felon fox engine: very bad Karma.

3. I have a stock Brodak P-40 ARF with over 450 flights. ...... With that said, I would go with Geoff's advice and consider replacing the lead outs if you think they are poorly crimped. (I do like CF rods with ball links for all my pushrods though. They are not needed, but they sure make the controls work smoothly. ;-)

4. Please let us know how it all works out. Photos would be more than welcome. :-)

5. Welcome back. :-)

PS: The LA .46 is nice, but you may want to consider using a modern Electric system. It would be a perfect match for your great flying Cardinal, and allow you access to many more flying sites. If you are interested in this, just go to the Electric section on this forum site.
