Tank installation glitch in Smoothie ARF
« on: May 23, 2007, 03:36:40 PM »
I ordered an RSM 4.5 ounce tank for my Smoothie ARF.  Lovely job, and I prefer the way Eric does his uniflo vents.

Well, I got it fitted into the fuselage with a bit of expected grinding to match the tubes and allow the tank to go back into the fuselage above the wing. (the plane is usually supposed to have a 4-ounce tank, enough for the OT pattern, but not Classic).

At this point, I discovered that there is no room to install the hatch!  I looked on the Brodak website, and sho' enuf, his tanks are 1.75" wide not the standard 2".  DANG!!!

So much for flying this puppy this weekend, and the next weekend is the Knights' Joust contest.  Gloom.

Already ordered one from Brodak.  Mistake???  If there was an alternative hatch attachment, that would work.  I could cut off the part that extends down into the tank compartmane and then glue it down with Silicone Seal.  Anyone got other ideas?

You could attach the back with an 1/8" dowl from the hatch to the former, glue the dowl in a hole in the hatch and just have it fit into a hole in the former. The front you could notch out the block and epoxy a small piece of ply so it hangs down on the inside of the former that the tank vents go through and them drill a hole from the front of the former into the ply and secure with a screw, just like they have on the sides of the hatch. ??? ??? ???

I just installed a tank for a customer and you need to use a Brodak medium wedge tank. You can also notch the front end of the wing to allow the tank to be longer. You still can grind on the hatch and use the original holes for the fasteners.
