T-Rex ARF Redeux
« on: January 08, 2012, 10:42:44 PM »
Evo 60, Sullivan 6 oz hard tank. CG 7.375" from TE.
First flight Tuesday.

Question-Are 67' lines a good starting point?

Tore off the monokote to get to the areas that need fixing (yes I know it can be done laproscopically).
Made the fixes listed on this board, fuse, spar webs, incidence corrections, fiberglassing stuff etc.
Forgot to amp up on caffine before starting the compressor to paint it.
Result? A porky but shinny ARF.

Looks good....
I would suggest 63' eye to eye of .018's
Have fun!

Looks nice!

Just how heavy is it?  Most of those ARFs started out silly light, like 58 ounces ready to fly, so you should have had an easy five or six ounces available to add reinforcements to the structure.

Weight??
Welllllll, after fixing some "assembler" induced issues.....69 oz?
I know, way too heavy. The dope finish added about 6-7 oz so I'm guessing the fixits added about 5-6 oz.
No maiden just yet. I'll probably get out Sat and give it a try.

Thats not out of family from what some of our club guys got in terms of weight after doing fixes.  One ended up at 80 ounces, so don't feel bad.  I bet it flies just fine.

Thanks guys,
I feel better about this. I thought I would have to go to weight management counseling.

Maidened the T-Rex today.
Ended up on 63' lines. Changed from a 12X5 to a 12X6 and ended up on a 13X5 Xoar. Really liked the Xoar. Its turning sub 5 sec laps (4.9s). Fuel is 10% N, 16% synthetic, juiced with a couple percent of Castor.

The motor justs chugs along. I did not get a motor break, just a steady fast 4 stroke or rich 2 stroke. Kinda like an LA 46. Inverted pace about the same.
Tomorrow I'll try 65' lines to get to 5.2 sec laps.
Thanks to Dave Hull (racer Nats champ) for sticking around to help me sort it out. According to Dave, the plane flew crisp corners with no discernable yaw or wing drop.
Very stable both upright and inverted.

FYI
You can get some P-47 decals from the parkzone. They are for their Snorting bull P-47.

I picked up a decal sheet for 5 bucks from Smith Bros in the SFV.
