Ok, anyone have a suggestion on a power plant for the sv11 arc? I have been procrastinating about getting back into this but the sv11 was calling my name. I was thinking a 51 or there about. While I can afford a PA, I just can't see spending $400 on a engine for a $200 arc. I do want something stone cold reliable and proven. Seeing that Rojett cast engines are no longer produced, I guess a reworked NIB engine from a major manufacturer is the way to go?

Peter,
I spoke to Randy today about an engine for the SV 11; when he finds your question, he will probably post the real answer. Until then, it is a full size model and will probably weigh in the low to mid 60 oz. range. A PA 51/pipe set up will work, but I plan a PA 61 or 65 for mine.
The Enya 60 rear exhaust CL stunt engine & pipe would be a lower cost alternate.
Cheers,
Jim

All righty then, Seeing that this will be my only engine and plane. I guess I'll spring for a PA 51. I don't want to into the 60 range as I already have a old OS 60 gold head NIB, for a plane that needs a 60. So if a PA 51 will work well in the SV 11 then I'll stick with that. Since that will bring the total for the motor and plane combo up to nearly $600.00 it will have to wait about 60 days as I just had to spend a bundle getting the wife's car fixed. ( $1,500). The discretionary budget is right around $500 per month. I'll post further questions about the engine on the engines forum. Thanks Randy.

Don’t forget the K&B 61 $100.

Hi William,
The original SV-11 was flown by Bill Rich with the ST 60. Is the ARF/ARC different?

The SV-11 ARF is NOT setup to drop in a ST 60, if you want to use that engine you will just need to open up the motor mounts

Looks like a 6.5 ounce metal tank will be about the limit on fuel without major mods or custom tank . Brodak All vents forward tank looks good . To put in a ST 60 you will need to remove a small amount of motor mount material to clear crankcase, Alum pads will be needed too, these will need to be relieved to clear engine . Pretty iffy , But I will post pictures when I get installed . Kit is very well designed to accomidate these changes,, Great job by Randy Smith and John Brodak on the ARF .

"To put in a ST 60 you will need to remove some motor mount material to clear crankcase,""
As I had stated it was NOT setup to be a dropin fit for motor that was discontinued over a decade ago, The mounts are wide and closer together for a reason,
You can always open the mounts up, you cannot close them down to take a less wide case engine.
It is very easy to use a carbide flat bar sander, rasp, or bar sander to cut an angle on the side of the MM to have them fit a ST 60 or wider motor.
DO This BEFORE you glue the top block piece on to the plane, it is a simple Job.
Also we have never used anything bigger than a 6.5 inch long tank in any SV-11, stock 1 inch thick is 6.5 ounces and I have 7.5 and 8 ounce metal Uni tanks that wil fit if needed.
We always used Magnum uniflows in the SVs

Mine weights in at exactly 60 oz. with a Stalker .66 RE. (Engine is ca. 12.5 oz with muffler).
Just a slight trimming of motor mounts needed. Balance was right on with no extra weights needed.
Needed to add 10 mm to the nose ring due to the lenght of the engine.
I use the variable motor mount (Windy/Brodak). Also put on 2 1/4 " wheels.
Flyes very well.

One of Randy S's recommendations is the Enya 61CXS (available in rear or side exhaust).
If you don't want to spring for the full boat PA with pipe etc. I would strongly recommend going with the Enya side exhaust engine.
An excellent running engine and made like a jewel. It will fit in the SV with very little mount material removal (I know I've tried it on mine).
The Enya is a much smoother running than the old ST60 and I think the ARF will live a much happier and longer life with it than the Paint shaker.
If you do decide to use the ST definitely add some stiffening to the nose section of the Fuselage.
Mine is actually sitting with a RO Jett 65 in it on a pipe because I have two and really want to use them.
I used a PA51 for many years and lots of flights and definitely would not discourage that choice, but the Enya would be an excellent and Cheaper close 2nd best in my opinion.
I'm currently recovering from surgery and a post op infection so I haven't flown the SV yet but it is a great airplane. I built two from plans in the past and they both flew very well. One had a Randy S. OS46VF and the other a PA51. Both setups worked very well.

I am not sure where you got the info but we are still producing the cast case engines. In fact we have a new lite cast case 61 that Windy flew at VSC this year.

Hi
People have been very pleased with the New SV-11 ARF and ARC, however there has been a control horn issue with them, some of the horns have brazing that does not go all the way around the wire, This needs to be checked, and if found replaced ..before... you put them together. WE have more horns coming in now, as this problem has just been found
The kit has very nice CF pushrods, ball links and phenolic bellcranks with a good mount system. The hinges are good, and so is the other hardware. The other issue is the cowl mount, it works well for RE motors, but if you run a SE motor you will need to move 1 of the mounts

Hello!
I have an original SV-11 and I'm using a Stalker .61 . The weight of the model is 1650 grams. Propeller 13x5.5
I'm planning to order an ARF SV-11 from Brodak and for this model I will use a Stalker .66

I am flying my SV11 ARF with a piped PA 65. I think I would be hard pressed to find a better engine for it. I used a Sullivan 8 oz rectangular tank. The engine only needs about 6 oz to get through the pattern, but I went with the Sullivan tank because it was readily available and easy to fit. Plus, it works well.
I set up my engine and run it exactly the way Randy says to do it. Generally starts on the first flip and delivers a perfect stunt run.
Thanks Randy for a great airplane and a superb power plant.

Looks great William!
Good luck with it.
(of course the Wood Bros./Pearson '71-'73 Cyclone used a true Candy Red paint job on the roof! ;D )

Here is a thread revivement....
I'm planning on using the OS .46AXll in the SV-11 that is coming this way soon. I hope the cg and fit, as well as the proper run, works out for this engine and plane.
I will report back my findings.

you could use the magnum 52 (blue head) I'm flying a full size legacy with one and it does it with authority. Randy sells them ready to fly.

So, do you guys think that the OS.46AXII will be short on power for this plane? I keep hearing .5X-.60 sized engines being mentioned.... But I am under the impression that the newer engines, if operated at higher revs with lower pitched props, will far surpass the 4-2-4 engines (ST.51 for example) of yesteryear.
I assume that the newer engines (Schnurle), even if operated to give a 4-2-4, will STILL give more power than the older engines.
From all I can read, it should be plenty of power if the venturi is sized appropriately, but I'm no expert.
One reason I DID select this engine though, is that the OS.55AXII should be a "drop in" replacement to give a few more cubes displacement if more power is needed, with very little, if any, weight gain. Mounting holes should be identical.

The modern Loop Charged 46 51 51 53 will pull the SV-11 very well, ALL of these have more power than an Older St 60

Merco 61.....better if Dixon tuned.
Sorry........Devil came to me...... lover of the British Bulldog and the good Tom.
Kind regards from Spain.

another excellent motor to use for these size planes that fit well into an ARF is the Magnum Blue Head 52 I can supply these setup and ready to go, smaller footprint that a ST OS Merco or K&B 61 but more power than all of them

Jim you are evil...grin
I got talked out of a stalker and into a Randy Smith Magnum 52 for my SOMEDAY SV 11
Randy's price was good, the engine came, I had to run on the bench... it primed, it bumped, and it started first back flip
I had a BSEG, ran out a tank of fuel, purged, ARO and set aside for the SOMEDAY SV-11
-
Someday soon i hope. I'm gonna get scott dinger to make me a tube muffler for the .46ax-ll that I plan to put into my ANYDAYNOW SV-11....
-
Engine is here, and standing by.
-
I have more Magnum 52s coming, and those will be a really great choice for an inexpensive engine , They also are built well true ABC and have a lot of power

Hi All - Thank you for the great info in this thread. I have a couple questions though I was hoping to get your input. I have a new OS FP 60 w a Motorman veturi and NVA. Didn't see discussion on this engine and wondering what the consensus is on this engine option? Also what are your thoughts on either a ringed ST 51 or a 61 for this plane. Thank you very much in advance. Andy

Andy,
Is it too late to consider a Stalker 76? Just chugs along on FAI fuel.

Just got my SV-11 ARF put together. Put a PA 75 in it. Can't wait to see it go.
