Super Clown Electric ARF
« on: September 29, 2016, 10:40:30 PM »
Well, I finally got around to going back the the Brodak Electric Super Clown ARF that I bought last year.  The build quality was so bad, that I just threw it back in the box and put it away.  But, having just finished the electric Ringmaster ARF, I decided to come back to this.

The motor ring on the plane was glued in with the motor canted inboard, not out.  And the rest of the wood glued to the ring was done in a horribly chintzy way.  I ended up cutting the ring off and re-gluing it at the correct angle.  Then I applied two layers of glass and epoxy to hold it tight.  The wing cutout wasn't very good either.  The ply doublers needed a lot of trimming to match the balsa cutout.  Once that was flush, I slid the wing in place to check alignment. "Glue wing in place with thin CA" my fanny.  I cut 1/2" wide strips of 1/32" balsa and glued it in place over the top and bottom of the wing to fill the open gaps between the wing and fuse.

I did the elevator hinges like the instructions say.  Another fail.  I ended up cutting them out and re-doing them.

I'm doing the flap hinges now.  They're okay using the pinned hinges in the kit, but I'd use different ones in the future if I were to be given another one of these kits.

The stab cutout at the rear of the fuse was WAY off.  I'd say it was canted a good 10 degrees.  So more sanding and aligning.

I'm wondering how well the silver solder is going to adhere to those polished pushrods in the kit.  Gonna need a lot of roughing up before soldering.  But the pushrods sure do look pretty.

It's amazing how night and day this kit is compared to the Ringmaster ARF.  That one was a joy to assemble.
