Oriental powered by old Fox .35 Stunt
« on: December 28, 2014, 06:12:18 AM »
     Hi All:

I have had an old Fox .35 Stunt, the one with 4 head bolts and 2 backplate bolts, for many years.  Would this engine have enough power to pull a Brodak ARF Oriental through the pattern or would it be too weak for this task.

I have many better Stunt engines but the the cool factor of the old Fox would be great!

    Suggestion?

                                                                                  Tia,

                                                                                  Frank

Hi Frank;

This is a very antique and rare engine. I suggest tht you store it. Maybe RINGMASTER is a better option!

Frank,
If the engine is sound it should be fine.  I am flying an ARF Oriental with a 35 Stunt and it does not have any problems.  If the engine is on weak side after you try it out, you can always drop in a more modern version.  While I agree the cool factor would be high with this engine the Oriental does not lend itself to showing off the engine.  The Ringmaster would make a better showpiece and be more period correct but the potential for burp could be there.  Perhaps something uncowled like a Barnstormer could be a better home if you had more time on your hands.  Another thought would be to try a Smoothie.  I had one with a 35 Stunt that was a good pairing and this would allow you to show off the historic piece you have.

Best of luck with whatever direction you go.

To the best of my knowledge the early Fox 35's did not suffer the dreaded burp.
that came later.

Any Fox 53 or earlier should work fine.

Hi Frank,

Your Brodak ARF Oriental is a very nice airplane. It deserves better than the horrible bad Karma that comes with having a "Felon" Fox up front. There are many good (non-Felon) alternatives available, some in your own collection I'm sure.

Should work fine. Unless it is worn out, I wouldn't expect much performance gain from a later Fox. The collectibility might be another matter, you do risk wrecking it, but if it runs good I would use it, myself.

It is the first year they made that engine?  1948?  If so, you might want to keep it and run something else.

Where are the Fox 35 experts here?  The two screw backplate version is one of the first.

I am sending off a new Fox 35 Stunt to Randy Smith to work it for the Ares I will build next.

Now if I just learn to fly.

Did my first of the season yesterday.

Check the link.  Yours is a pre-51 engine for certain...
