Nobler ARF Rebuild with a restyle..
« on: October 02, 2015, 09:57:20 PM »
All right here is the next project if anyone followed along with my 30 Day Ringmaster, I will have the same fun with this project. Items will include the addition of a balsa cowling and a restyled rudder. Also a control system upgrade will be added as well. I will also beef up the nose area and add a new tank. And a complete recover job removing the monokote and applying colored silk covering job. All info for this project will be taken from this forum in this ARF section. So, enjoy folks.

I like it so far. What are you going to do for a LG? Aluminum or CF, I hope. There are some pictures (hopefully) of one rebuilt by Greg Bahrman that is really lovely, if you need some inspiration. He's in Simi Valley. H^^ Steve

Don't forget to beef up the engine mounts.  Or are you going electric?

Resumed work on the Nobler last night, Made a new firewall and then glued it in. Having trouble with the tank install but I have it figured out now. Hopefully this evening I can install the doubler extensions(?) on the nose to help stabilize everything.  I will get some pics tonight.

John,

I've been following your Nobler build.  H^^

Was it you who was going to make a new cowling out of balsa and not use the glass one that came with the model?

If so, have you made it yet?

I think I will have to make one also.

Good job!

Looks great, but from the old man, you should have done a search.  Most of the guys glue a piece of 1/64 ply to the opening and take it down pretty thin.

Doc,

I have seen that technique utilized before and I may still try it. I am not happy with the consistency in the thickness of the inlet. I believe that is one of the toughest parts of carving the cowling. I have one of Joe Rienharts planes and man, can he ever carve a beautiful cowling!!
Thanks for the tip.

I got to do a little work yesterday on the Noblarf cowling. I think I have around 9 hours of actual labor and somewhere around 20 hours of thinking about it..!!! So i got the cooling outlets cut, the hole for the igniter driver, the locating pin for the front of the cowl, and the cowl hold down bolt. For the hold down I used a piece of aluminum tubing that was .234 O.D (or so) I believe I used a letter "D" drill. I counterbored the tubing for the 4-40 capscrew, this allows the tubing to clamp up against the fuselage structure.

   Hi John;
Try and calculate the area of your air inlet, and the air exhaust holes in the sides. You want to have more open area for your exits, than you do for the inlet. You could make the inlet much smaller and still get plenty of air to the cylinder for cooling if you have large enough exits. If it's the other way round, you build up pressure in the cowling and that restricts air flow. If what you have isn't enough. maybe you can add one directly behind the head on the very bottom of the fuselage, and open the slots on the side some more. Lots easier to do it now than when the model is finished and you have overheating issues. I think it was in an older issue of Stunt News where Ted Fancher, another great carver of cowlings, went into detail of how to carve one and explains the cooling issues. Might even be something here on Stunt Hanger also. Looking real nice for a first effort at the ordeal, though!
  Good luck and have fun,

My thoughts maybe are more practical-minded...a bigger hole for the ignitor...you may want to use aluminum tubing to line the hole or at least soak the balsa well with thinned epoxy. Might also want to add a mini-phone jack and wiring to the glowplug for a remote battery.

And also, make absolutely certain that you will be able to put a finger over the venturi while pulling the prop through. Even being able to spin the prop over with an electric finger while slipping an index finger onto the venturi can be useful at times. (I do it all the time!)

Some may say these doo-dads are too fancy for an ARF Noblur, but you'll gain experience from the doing and the failures, if any. Keep up the good work!  H^^ Steve

Thanks for the good words Steve, I had planned on lining the intake as well as the hole for the igniter with 1/64th plywood. Finally picked up some this week end and work on that will resume this week.

I made some other progress this weekend, I intalled the improved bellcrank/leadout assy. into the wing and worked on the canopy/cockpit details. I also started on the handle for this airplane.

Nice work so far.  How difficult was it to remove the covering before you started?  Really like the rudder re-work. Although the Nobler is Iconic,..the rubber has never really turned my crank. Much prefered the look of Bob G's stylings.  Your cowling work is awewome!

Curmudgeon time!  mw~

With all this rework, crafty planning and great craftsmanship, why did you not just do a build from scratch or at least a  kit?  VD~

Great work, and welcome documentation! I hope the finishing goes as well as the structure and control work.

Check out the SLC over Polyspan thread in the Paint and Finishing section on a very light finish.

Good eye Leester!!! The 4" would not fit without some major surgery and it was time to close up the center section. If I build a Nobler from scratch, I will definitely incorporate the 4" crank.

When you order Randolph clear, you can ask for the blue tint to be deleted. I was lucky to have Rod Claus with me at Spencer Aircraft. He said they normally put the blue tint in it so the guy painting a 1:1 scale plane can see where he's applied "clear" and where he hasn't.  y1 Steve

John,

My guess is you will be applying primer over your tinted clear. I loose track when applying clear. soooooo, with the Gee Bee Z, I have a score sheet. I'll do the same with the ARGO II.

About that 4" bellcrank. I only use a 3" bellcrank, on everything. Am I missing something by not using a 4" one?

You did a great job with the model.  H^^

Noblarf is at a standstill now, got too many honeydoos and 3 (countem') girls playing Travel Softball so progress will be slow going forward. As soon as I get some more done I will post. In my few free moments I have in the hangar I have been fooling with some engines converting them to CL So be on the lookout on the 'Bay. Got some nice FP's and maybe some LA's listed soon. John,

I was reviewing your Thread. Great Thread and nice work!  H^^

Did you purchase a Tom Morris retro-fit control linkage setup or did you wing it with parts?

I was wondering how the Tom Morris Nobler setup fit?

John,

You can troll if you want, it doesn't upset me. Doesn't read well in Threads though.

If I missed something, you could have easily just replied.

Did you purchase a Tom Morris retro-fit control linkage setup or did you wing it with parts?

I was wondering how the Tom Morris Nobler setup fit?

Charles

I got my Tom Morris Controls the other day.

Just not sure yet how to make it all work yet ;D ??? :o

Liner,

Great!

What are the measurements on the horns. From wire to hole?

It would be appreciated.

John, Liner,

Thanks for that. I may go John's way to save some money. I'm still trying to sell my ARF Nobler, so I have some time to decide.

The incidence meter might be from Robart.  Hangar 9 also had one called the Angle Pro but I think it has been discontinued. Too bad because the Angle Pro came with a nifty little digital inclinometer.  I have not seen any of these Angle Pros left over in any hobby shops but if I ever do I will get it to have a back up for that inclinometer.

The Robart tool works fine.  It has a bubble level and a needle and scale to read.  No inclinometer.
