My Brodak SV-11 ARF
« on: September 27, 2024, 08:15:26 AM »
Hi all. When I had decided to buy a Brodak SV-11 ARF - they disappeared from the site. In the middle of 2022 I wrote an email to Brodak and they told that 3 planes are still available, 2 green ones and a blue one. So I did not wait anymore and ordered a blue kit. In a month or so the big package arrived and was happy with the craftmanship of the ARF model for that price. After that due to massive changes in my life I was able to start building the model in 2024 only. Finally, after some changes in the construction the model was airborn in September 2024. The list of changes in the construction (some of them were taken after reading posts here on the forum):
- landing gear was reinforced with 1.5mm plywood;
- a small washers were added on the top of the ball joints;
-  wing and cabin are made removable.

I realized that i need to have at least a removable wing when I tried to put a non-built so far model into the car so i decided to change the construction and it was the most challenging part. For this change I reinforced the lower-middle part of the fuselage and first ribs. The connection of the wing and cabin is done via M3 blind rivets. All the modifications added about 80-90g to the overall weight.
After a couple of first flights on the grass the propeller blade hit the ground and it lead to the total damage of motor mount which was very frustrating - it should have withstanded this, so I had to fix this with several layers of 1.5mm plywood and epoxy.

The control system was not changed (tried to contact okieair to have and improved version but havent received any response hence decided to continue with the default one) except the fact that on the wing control horn i use a detachable connection.

After first flights I revealed that the intake ventilation works poorly and the engine is hot even though it was +15+20 outside. Most likely this is caused by new motor mount which is much more durable but doesnt have so many holes in it - so I decided to install a carbon air intake on top of the motor.

Specs:
Engine - BadAss 3515
Propeller - 3 blade carbon 12x5.3
ESC - Jeti Spin 66
Timer - Igor Burger
Battery - 6S 2600mAh
Lines - 19m 0.45 4-strand

In general I am satisfied how the model flies - this is my first full size plane, it pulls like a bear, easily makes full pattern (the model, not me :) - I fly the full pattern already but the "quality" of the stunts is so-so) and is maneuverable in the turns. I had concerns if the collaplsible construction will be durable but so far it looks okay.

Glad it is working for you.   Now you need a coach and practice.  Oh. the plane looks great. D>K

We will see for how long the construction will last :) Regarding the coach - unfortunately in the area I live I am the only one who fly CL. I share the RC field for the flights and the guys with 4-5meters planes come and ask what CL is  and how to fly this, after that  start telling that they remember such thing from their childhood :)
This year before flying this plane I managed to do the full pattern but it is a long way to make stunts look like they should. And without a coach it is nearly impossible.
