Joinig wing of SV-11 ARF Take Apart.
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:23:06 PM »

How many layers of 1.4oz fiber glass should a use to  join the SV-11 wing?

Already made 3 layers, but wondering if this is enough.

The  wing is take a part, so the fiberglass job will have to do all the work to hold the wing together.

A pipe is going be near, is there any concern with temperature?

Martin

Does it have any internal spars? They will help "bear the load" also.
Actually the spars do most of the load bearing..

My concern is, is the fiber glass tapered out a ways from the center?   If not you have a stress point at the edge of the fiber glass, in my thinking. H^^

Hi Martin,

1. The SV11 has very strong spars when the two wings are joined together. These spars can carry the entire load by themselves. The FG just holds the two wing parts together and helps stiffen the center area. The load is on the spars, as pointed out by Gll.

2.  ONE layer of 3/4 oz. FG cloth would be enough. The amount you have now is fine, and will not hurt anything by having a little extra. ;-)

3. As long as your pipe does not rest against the epoxy you will not have any problems. Here is a link to some neat pipe mounts that may be of interest to you, and give you some ideas.

4. You can also use silicone fuel tubing to keep the pipe from touching your plane.

5. Look in the "Engine" section on the SH forum for more CL pipe mounting info.

6. The SV 11 ARF/ARC is a great flying plane. Randy's planes are outstanding! I love my ARC SV 11, no pipe ..... it is E powered.  :-)

Rudy

Hi Gil,

Sure the spars are there, but they just butt together in the middle. There is another spar in the middle of the wing that is continuous across but I believe this is just for aligning the two halfs when assembling the wing,  it probably does not work that much.

The reason I concern about this is because a friend built this ARF for me and used one thin layer of a fiber cloth that fail.

I have apply 3 layers of a thicker.

See the picture of the cracked wing with one layer.

Hi Doc,

It does not taper and you are so right, it will cause a stress area right at where the fuselage begins. Will have to keep an eye there.

Hi Rudy,

1-   The problem is that the spar just butt at the middle, like a foam wing.
2-   The pipe is not resting there, but it is close.  I wonder if the heat somehow weaken the epoxy and caused the failure. This is my first experience with pipe engines. Is it my impression or the pipe will make the engine run hotter ?  I use a Dave Brown Pipe Mount for the pipe.

3-   Yup the SV-11 flies amazingly well. I was probably doing some very hard cornering with it when it fails.

Thank you all for your input
