Hi everyone
I am looking for  either an ARF or ARC large size model to convert to electric and possibly modify to detachable wing etc to use for competitions around the country. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Cheers from downunder!

Hi Alan,

There have been ARCs/ARFs for the Strega, SV-11 and Impact that would fit the bill for what you are looking for.  There are a few Impacts left at UHP, Brodaks was the supplier for the others.  Randy Smith *might* have some of the SV-11 at his shop.

P.S. forgot to mention the Yatsenkos and Kaz Minato, I am not 100% sure what they offer besides complete models......

Hi Allan,

Bill is right on target.

The Impact ARC is excellent. If UHP has one, contact them ASAP! After flying with Paul and watching him fly his ECL Impact at several contests, I called UHP. I love mine, it has a Plett. motor just like Paul's 1st and 2nd one had. The UHP ARC is beautifully made, light and strong. Very easy to convert to ECL.

Randy's wonderful SV-11 is also a great choice, but I don't know if they are still available? I have one of his ARCs and it is a very nice plane. I have a Hacker 40S in mine. See the complete ECL conversion thread here on SH in the E section.

I also have the well designed, and great flying, T-Rex ARC. These are still available from Brodak's website. There is a very complete ECL conversion thread for this plane on the "Getten ALL AMPed up" section of this SH Forum. This thread also shows how to do the few (minor) wing mods and fuse. mods, that help the plane live a long healthy life. :-) ...... (NOTE: This is an excellent flying, and well designed plane. To keep the plane light, the designer called out thinner wood parts to compensate for the very heavy/strong balsa that was being used on early CL ARF/ARCs. Unfortunately for the designer, his plane was the 1st that got the new lighter/better balsa that is used now. The mfg. did not tell anyone of the change. The plane is very light, which is great, but it just needs a few braces in the fuse, and in the wing center spar area. The thread shows a great HOW TO on this easy mod. This plane is the easiest to convert to E power. It also looks like a P-47 WWII plane.)

Brodak also has the ARC Vector 40 (it's a smaller, 40 size version of the SV-11) and the ARC Legacy available and in stock now. These are both good planes, I have the Vector but I am not familiar with the Legacy, other than others seem to like it a lot.

If you go to the Electric forum here on SH, click on the very top of the forum where it says SETUPS. You will find many different E power systems for all the above ARCs.

All the planes above have won many Nat's trophies and are very competitive. Paul's IMPACT of course has both World and USA Nat's. 1st place trophies. Watching Paul fly his Impact, is like watching a great artist draw perfect figures on a bright blue canvas with a very nice looking paint brush. :-)

I like the ARFs for all my ERC planes. They are all made for E power and thus are easy to set up. I like to use ARCs in CL planes because I find them easier to modify for ECL and to convert them to have the wing come off, like our RC planes. There are several informative threads here on SH showing different ways to make take-apart ECL planes. My guess is that you already have many good ideas on how to do that already. ;-)

Good luck with your search, and please let this ARF forum know how it all worked out. :-)

A major restriction is the package size. You will need to check with your supplier to find which ARC/ARF models can be shipped to Australia and what they will cost.

The only way that I was able to get ARC Vectors from Brodaks was as accompanied oversize luggage when a niece returned from a stay in the US.

Hi Geoff,

Your ARC Vector already has the equivalent miles of 3,448 CL flights on it, ..... who says ARCs/ARFs are not made to last! ;-)

Thank you for reminding us of the shipping issues with CL planes. I'm glad you were able to get one.

We all owe a great deal of gratitude to John Brodak, and the folks at Great Planes, for bringing many thousands of CL ARC/ARFs to our little part of the modeling world. With that said, I wish the CL planes could have been modified, at the factory, to be take-apart planes like RC planes are. Ideally two piece wings on a tube and two piece fuse. This would have solved most of the shipping problems to countries outside the USA. I know how important "tradition" is to CL flyers in the USA, and that CL designs are sacred here, but a few mods would be helpful to all of us. A few mods would help shipping, storage, and transporting in the smaller vehicles that will be in our future. I always marvel at the F2B planes that fit into very small cases. I wish we could have used some of these designs for our ARF/ARCs. I do understand that cost is an issue, along with the fact that CL is a dying activity and we can't blame any company for not investing in it's future with new designs, etc.

Thanks again for your input. We americans are so spoiled with receiving smooth shipping of anything, from anywhere, that we forget there are wonderful countries like yours that have shipping issues. Shipping and military stuff we do real well, most other things (health care, education, income fairness, poverty, infrastructure, etc.) we are still trying to catch up with you and the rest of the 1st world countries.

Regards,
Rudy

Thanks Geoff , Rudy and Bill for your input. It's very much appreciated!
Randy's web site shows he is out of stock of SV11's as is Brodak . I think I will give the Impact a go and I have sent an Email to UHP, Freight isn't all that bad I have bought quite a bit from Brodak in the past and it has only been an extra $50.00 or sowhen buying ARF's. I will also check out those threads.
Thanks Again
Al
