Flight Report:

RO Jett .67 RE, Scott Dinger Custom Muffler. Eather 12.5x5.5 3 blade prop, 2" Carbon Fiber Spinner from Stalker(Kaz Minato sell them) Spinner weighs less than .5 oz. 6 Oz plastic clunk tank, Powermaster 10/18 with 6 oz of Klotz oil added. I fly on very short lines 60', which allows me to run lower RPM 8000 at launch, flies pattern mostly in 4 cycle with very little 2-4 break. This also has a more pleasant sound. I used some aluminum R/c Gear , and Dave Brown lite tires which saved weight

Yes it does weigh 57Oz on digital scale! It flies very, very well, turns flat,grooves well, and is not difficult to fly.
It tracks well, and no funnies.So far it flies well in the wind. I have not had it in Texas style wind yet. But I saw Richard Oliver fly his in that kind of wind and it did well, he won the Memorial Day Contest in Houston several years ago with the Giles.

My flying partners who are advanced level Pilots , and one who has done some judging at the Expert level say this plane flies as good as any I have had or better.

I will make the next Giles with a Stalker 66 RE long stroke, which is only 11 0z and muffler is 1.4 oz. This will save
even more weight. However I have stripped the factory covering which is very light and will cover with Monokote,
(to keep the weight down) either a RED BULL or Bud Light Laser paint scheme.

I purchased another Giles last week from Hobbies and Helis International for $44.00 on sale. ph# 610-282-4811.

Spare Canopies and Cowling are still available from Nitro Models.

Do you have any pictures of the engine crutch set-up and bellcrank construction or is this covered on Sparky's site somewhere?They still have some left,so at that price,I got two......

This engine is mounted with a stock R/C mount supplied with the kit. Pictures of the bellcrank are still available from when Richard Oliver posted them . I will get the date and forum for you. Also Darrle Harvin has an extensive article
on his c/l conversion of the Giles.

Look at the Following on Stuka Stunt - search for Giles 202 , and you should get two main dates

11/23/2006 by Richard Oliver. I did the bell crank as he did . Darell Harvin article starts on 11/20/2008. He did

a lot more as he painted the plane but it gained a lot of weight 70 oz!. My next one will be Monokote which will be

heavier that the stock covering which is very light.

The fuse needs bracing , email me and I will explain , I used carbon fiber and light ply braces above wing and carbon

fiber strips on longerons on fuse and fuse floor. As well as added some 1/16 ply. I used a standard 6 oz clunk tank.

It does not need a RO Jett .67. I would not use a Saito .56 as they vibrate too much, Ask Frank Williams about that.

Walter...How much was shipping, and where did they ship from? I'm a bit apprehensive about giving them carte blanche on shipping. Sometimes there is no way to tell where the company is, when you're buying online!

Rodney has fixed me up with one of the Giles 202 ARTMIAS (Almost Ready To Make Into A Stunter) things. Thanks, Rod...I owe you a Bud Lite!

It is quite nice, but there's not much connecting the nose and the tail ends of the fuselage. I will come up with some structure to put under that nice plastic canopy/wing fairing thang. I did a "search" on SSW and came up with RO's posts, copied the photos and saved them to a "Giles 202" folder on my desktop. Now, I'm trying to find Darrell Harvin's thread(s?) and can't find them. I hope they weren't lost in Stunthanger's server meltdown this winter! Anybody have the pictures saved, or the whole series, or know where I can find it? Holla! PLEASE!

I've gotta study this plane a little more...but I'm not sure I'm going to put a .60 in it. Maybe a Magnum XL .53 or XLS .52. A T&L G.51 probably would be fine, but I'm thinking the ABC might be smoother. Too many options....

Steve If you cant find them I have all of them printed, not saved on my computer/ Also you need to make some bracing that goes from the firewall to the bulkhead in back of the wings .This is made from 1/8 lite ply and goes over the top of the wing and connects the fuse on top in that way. I can send you templates if you need. I also used carbon fiber strip .007 x1/2 on the floor under the wing and slightly in back of the fuse. Also same only sandwiched between 1/16 wood on the stringers on the bottom of the fuse in the same area.

Thanks for posting the pics, Walter. All saved, plus your Katana pics of the engine crutch, etc. More would always be better!

One thing that is bothering me is the aero balancing on the elevators...yikes! My gut feeling is that these would indeed reduce control loads, but also I don't think that part of the elevator would be very effective...a flat plate vs. a highly cambered surface (stabalizer with elevator deflected). I'm pretty sure I'm going to eliminate that. Probably by just building an entire new stab and elevators. First thing to do will be rip off all the film! No film will be ironed on this project...

If Ralph said it, it was a quote from some more knowledgeable source, like Frank. He did mention that it's a good idea to strip the covering from the stab and elevator, sheet with 1/16", and recover. RO didn't find this necessary, however . . .

From reading the posts in order from my comment about the aero-balanced elevators, and Walter's reply, I've deduced that it must have been Walter that provided the source of Frank Williams' comment on the subject, by PM or email.
