Brodak P40 Set Up Tips
« on: January 20, 2017, 07:45:40 AM »
I traded a pal a TF Gieseke Nobler kit for a Brodak P40 freshly built(not ARF version).I've been told that it is the same plane as the ARC and ARF items. I've got about ten flights on it so far and with trimming is getting better every flight. I was just curious as to how other folks are setting up their P40s Here is my set up so far:

50oz total  weight. Monokote Finish
La 40, Enya NVA,7mm Venturi, stock muffler (needed the nose weight!) 11x5 Zoar prop.
Flaps and elevators in suggested holes on horns.
1oz tip weight, lead outs most forward position
6oz R/C clunk tank with muffler pressure

                                                      Thanks,Phillyskip

I got my arf p40 second hand.
It's got and .46LA. on it, feeding from a 4oz(? I will check on this) uniflow tank, and a xoar 11 x 5.
Engine runs great 4-2-4 runs, and I'm not certain where the lead out is, or what tip weight is in it.
It did take a little tweaking of the original previous owner installed trim tab on the outer wing to get things settled upright and inverted.
Pulls like a mule, and great tension in overhead eights.
Easy to land. Nice plane.
Regards,
Chris

Chris, can you get thru the full pattern on 4 ounces with the 46?

Let me confirm it's 4 oz skip, but yes, it is pretty long winded on that tank. Occasionally if the needle is tweaked in a little too much it'll fly what feels like 9 minutes or so.
The .46 LA does have it's own custom venturi, it's probably smaller than stock sized, I'm guessing.

for some really good info on the LA 46 see the pinned thread in the engine forum.

THe Bordak P-40 was intended to have dihedryl becuase it has a low wing. The tab is likely to compensate for the Vertical CG being off. There are a lot ot threads on the P40 and the dihedral

They apear to have altered the flaps, they were partial span but less partial than yours appear to be, ( as in they used to be more flap less fixed portion)

I think my active flap portion on my early version arf is probably a couple inches longer than pictured on skips plane. But there is probably a good 6-7" of outboard fixed flap on my wing (with no dihedral).

Skip-
My uniflow tank as measured with the fuel syringe holds about 4-1/8ozs.
Yes the engine runs plenty long for the full pattern the way it is set up on my plane. I believe the venturi is smaller than stock, so that may account for some fuel economy. It may have an extra head shim also, not sure.
Running the Xoar 11x5 prop untouched. 4 cycle in level flight, with a nice 2 stroke break nose up.
Hope that helps.

Chris

Chris I went to the Xoar 11x5 and it works well with my La40 on 61ft lines eye to eye. Thanks for your input on that.

Roger that, Skip-

I just bought a few more of the Xoar props in other sizes I use and will be checking them for those planes.
They seems like quite nice prop, right out of the package, for those that don't want to spend time tuning a prop.
Glad it helped out!

I just checked mine and it's 50.3 ounces with an OS .46LA and an APC 11.5 x 4. The outer fixed flaps are 9 inches long both sides. The c/g is 3 inches aft of the leading edge at the fuselage. It's the kit version. I have good luck with the 11 x 4 on my .40LA engines. I mix my own fuel and get the pattern plus extras on 3 3/4 ounces. That's flying from sea level to 1000 msl.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

On my cardinal with a LA46 on it does the whole pattern on 4oz with 6 laps to burn. @9800 rpm and a 12.25 x 3.75 apc prop with 1/4 inch trimmed off each end.    I know its not a p40 but close on weight and size.

If you can get a rubber extender tube on your muffler you'll have almost no oil on your plane after flying.

MM
This can have an affect on the engine run, I tried it one time and took it off after a couple flights. I could not get the run happy so your mileage may vary

I actually have my P40 flying pretty well at present. Since it's got a 40 I'm flying on 61' lines eyelet to eyelet. I added additional wing tip weight and she seems to have responded nicely .I also raised the tank a bit to get inverted and right side up runs the same. I'll take her to Brodaks and fly it in Profile Intermediate.

Nobler Fox 35
Vector LA 40
Both engines run great and clean up is minimal.

I recently acquired the P40 ARF model. Got in the air 2 weeks ago w/ about 6 flights so far. Here are my stats:

Evolution 36NT power w/ small venturi
Evolution stock tube muffler
11-4 prop
1 oz tip weight (I fly w/ lighter 65# test Spectra lines)
4 oz oval profile uniflow tank
Muffler pressure
2 washers up front on the engine for a bit of offset
Lead outs unchanged from how they were set up in the pre-built wing
Control horn hole settings per the Brodak instructions
Flying on 60' lines

Still learning the model. I am nowhere at the competition level, but it seems to fly well.

A few initial observations:

Has plenty of pull (but not overly so)

The flap and elevator joiner wires are pretty flimsy resulting in significant differential flex. Probably OK for my sport/stunt flying, but not for competition level

I am going to first change to one washer on the engine front to decrease the offset angle. See if that settles down the pull a bit. After seeing how it flies, then adjust the lead outs if needed.
