Brodak Baby Clown Engine Mounting
« on: April 18, 2007, 05:38:11 PM »
I am just starting to put together this ARF. I am using an OS 25LA. When I put the motor onto the mounts and if I drill the holes for the engine bolts I will have less than 1/16th of an inch of meat left on the wood. This does not seem right. How can I improve on this situation? Is this the right motor plane combination? Should I use an engine with a wider case?

Dan,
The width is set up more for a Fox 35, but I have installed an FP 20 without issue (same bolt pattern).  Make sure that you have it centered as best you can.  Additionally, to make it fit the nose a little better, I cut out about 1/4-3/8 inch back from the standard cut out.  That would also help a bit for balance.
Good Luck,
John

One can but hope you are talking about the Super Clown, not the Baby!  The Baby is a 136 sq.in. 1/2A model.
Think S.M.A.L.L. y'all and, it's all good, CL, FF and RC!

Super Clown is a "little" wide between mounts, depending on your choice of engine.
3/32" aircraft ply shim, epoxied on each mount closes the gap and a Brodak .25 fits nicely.
You could still do this to strengthen your mounting.

I should have said "Super Clown" not baby Clown. I was thinking of using the Brodak Aluminum engine mounting system part #BH-795. This may solve the problem. I wil look at moving the engine back as well.
